126 BIS/Abarth 500 owner in Wales!

Hello there people! My name is Paul and i live in Dolgellau, North Wales. You will find me on the Fiat forum and the Abarth forum under the same user name.

Today i bought a 1989 Fiat 126 BIS from just down the road! I have no past experience with these funky little cars, hence why i joined this model specific forum, i have many unanswered questions! My other car is a 2009 Abarth 500 Launch Edition which is a hell of a car, only slightly different to the BIS!

I've named her Poppy (Abarth is called Abi) she's only got 16,000 on the clock and is in great nick, no rust at all! At the moment she has no tax/insurance but has MOT until December. I was told if i joined this site i would be able to get her insured cheaply? (my cheapest quote so far is £400! Nuts!) So any help appreciated. I bought her blind, had no idea what to watch out for, but she seems pretty tidy and genuine so hopefully there isn't much to do on her! Am i allowed to host pics from photobucket?  :)

Hello and welcome. You have defintely come to the right place. There is a wealth of experience in the Forum, so you are in good hands. Your 126 looks fantastic. I think you can get a discount by being a member of a club. I certainly got one. If you do you mind me asking, how much did you purchase it for?

hello, paul - i just joined last week, myself; best insurance-quotes i've got are with peter best, and peter d james - both £140! [fully-comp, breakdown, legal - and i have no no-claims (i currently own a vespa)]; there are a few threads, on this forum, re. insurance - but the majority of companies named were coming out @ £350-£400! the only two that were any good [for me] were the 'two petes', as above  :)

i'm just orf to view a 1980 126 de ville, now!

Good to see you joined us here Paul. I got mine insured through ECar when I had it, £240 fully comp with no NCD but give Chris Knott a try through the FF insurance scheme as well.

Thanks for the replies, it's a good start! Can't get her taxed without insurance obviously!

Paid £1080 for her, looking at the other restored examples on eBay, seemed quite a bargain! She won't be used that much, just in the summer in the dry really. She'll live under a carport in the summer months and hopefully my grandad will let me keep her in his garage over winter!  :)

Wey Hey, she looks just like mine!  I only collected Bolly two weeks ago and she is still a little shaky but like you the paint work is fantastic for a 20 year old car.  I got insurance through Lancaster - £125 fully comp with legal and staying on a public road so yours would be cheaper.  If you join the subscriber bit the technical bits can be accessed, really useful.

Hi guys, been cleaning the engine tonight. It may have only done 15,000 miles, but it's got 21 years worth of dust on it! I think it looks amazing! Still a bit of scrubbing to do on the engine block itself, the grease has gone but there's a bit of dark staining still present. Anybody recommend a good engine cleaner? I could just paint the dirty bits i guess...
