5 speed gearbox or 5th gear kit
« on: May 22, 2010, 12:50:42 PM »
hi all,
Yet again ive been on the open roads and the high revs at 110km/h have inspired me to look into a 5th gear again.

Has anyone got anything that could help me?

James.

What's the difference between the 2 options? (ie. short speed and overdrive)

I dont want to change the ratios of any of the existing gears, I just want the overdrive, that's all. is that possible?

Isn't the 4th gear in the Niki overdrive already?  You'd want over-overdrive. :)

I'm not sure, I cant remember the ratios off hand, but it sure runs out of gears at freeway speeds.

my gb sh#t itself in one of the nikis a little while back and i havent had time to fix it. Talking to Ross at Fiatorque, he mentioned that good quality gb bearings are obsolete in Australia. Due to these issues i've had thoughts about retro fitting a five speed box out of an X19. Havent done any research yet but could only imagine a custom bellhousing/fork would be much cheaper than the kit above.

yeah I thought of something like that too.. but an x1/9 is mid engine, the gearbox would be all wrong. a fiat 850 type box might be better but thats just 4 speed so not worth the effort imo. apparently a volkswagen gearbox isnt too hard to adapt, I dunno though.

looks like the short speed 3rd and 4th with overdrive is the one to go for.. I wonder if they come with everyday synchro's though..

Hi Guys, we have allready at home 3 pieces of five speed gearbox mounted at our cars. First one is from fiat500sport.com its classical road gearbox, its true that third and fourth speed its shorter but it isnt problem its still enough long and fifth its good for cruising, but if you have enough power you have max Km/h about 170-180km/h at about 7000Rpm ,allready tested on road when some as..ole on opel astra combi 1.4 was thinking that my car is too small soo I smoked him  :D . The two gearbox kits we ordered from Mr. Bacci Romano. This company its totally hardcore profi. You should build whatever gearbox you want, for example we have on theese gearboxes used fiat 500 drivetrain (its shorter than 126 aircooled) and on fifth its max 130 Km/h at 8000 Rpm what its ideal for uphill racing. When you shift from four to five acceleration its almost same like when you shift from first to second gear.
Whats same on all five gears kit that rebuild isnt for people without skills. To fit its needed to make quite lot modifications.
