Hi folks,

Just bought my first 126, a faded and rusty red 1991 126 Bis last on the road in 1997. My road to happiness (?!) started as a dare (believe it or not... !  ) and I'm now proud owner of what'll probably turn out to be a badgered example of the breed. Should be worth a giggle!


Anything in particular to look out for/be wary of? Apparantly it did run in 2007, but hasn't run since so pointers in getting it running again would also be ideal!

Pics soon when I've worked out how to get them off the phone!

Welcome!

If the car's been standing for quite some time and has no service history then it'd be best to change the fluids (e.g motor oil, gearbox oil, brake fluid, air filter) and also check to see if the brakes and steering are good. A must is to grease the king pins. I've read on the forum from other BIS owners that the BIS engines tend to overheat and like to 'burst' cylinder head gaskets so keep your eye out on the engine temp. gauge. Also look around the bodywork for signs of rust and holes...

Hello and welcome! I think GTMaster pretty much covered all the areas to check. The fuel in the petrol tank might be stale, so worth flushing it and replacing it with fresh petrol. Check the state of the battery also. Does it have any service history and at least the most recent MOT? See whether there are any advisories or failures.

The offside sill is going to need welded as it's gone frightfully crusty just ahead of the rear wheels, so with a bit of luck that'll get done shortly; other than that, the offside rear wheelarch is rotten, as is the front panel just beside the nearside headlight. Its last tax disc expired 8/97 so unfortunately no previous MOTs. It lay on a driveway under a tarpaulin for a few years, but has been garaged more recently. It was originally taken by a friend of mine as part of a load of scrap, but he took pity on it... and now I have.

My new year's resolution was to stop taking pity on metal... that'll be the first fail of the year then!

It's only done 20k, but I'll be doing a full service, fresh fuel and new battery as part of the wake up process. The brakes aren't stuck on so it shouldn't be too difficult to at least change whats required on the anchor front... I hope!
