:) OK been to see the guy today & they are going to try a test run with a small sheet of copper I picked up. I found out more about computer laser cutting & these guys want to try it on their machine because with the recession any work is better than no work at all but shiney reflective materials like aluminium & copper bounce the laser beam back at the lense & knock it out. They are £500 a time so it is all in the balence. The copper I picked up was thicker than I wanted at aboiut 1.2mms which is about the same as a standard compressed head gasket but it had the advantage of being stored outside so all of the shine was gone, hence the test run. So will see how it goes but I am now wondering if the expensive new sheets , sprayed with a thin coat of matt black high temp paint will solve the laser problem. Any of you guys that got the disc brake adaptor plates from me will know that the surface on the steel plate is matt finish for that reason. Also had a chat about more plates being made as my 2nd lot of 10 pairs is now running out & it is no problem as long as I can order a quantity  [-/

OK this project has moved on about as quickly as a glacier & the last time I contacted the laser cutters said the experiment had failed but fortunately they packed it in before they caused any damage to the £500 laser lense. So they were a bit peed off as they wanted the work . I then went into hold mode so I could have a think about it & how I could get a trial set without spending a couple of hundred pounds. So I eventualy decided to give the go ahead to pass the project onto the water jet cutters and get a test set made from the "thicker than I wanted"  copper sheet that I bought. So contacted the guys again only to find that they had already passed it on  ::)
So at the moment I have no idea how much this is going to cost but I am told the test set will be ready in the morning  :o

Well this is blooming hard work  ::)
Went to see the guy today, place looked a bit quiet. A real 21st century story unfolded , turned out that this long established, successful small engineering firm who had a small overdraft , owed nothing to the VAT people & the paye was up to date have been forced into liquidation by the bank. Another fine example of how our bankers support local industry & manufacturing . No wonder this country is in such deep s**t !!
So the guy has now had to lay off his small work force, some of whom had been with him for almost 20 years. All is not yet lost though & the guy is hoping to rescue the main part of the business & machinery and re-emerge to fight again.
However in the midst of all this my little project has got a bit screwed up as the guy forgot my verbal instructions that accompanied my drawings. Net result is that I am £80 out of pocket & for my troubles I have got a solid copper head gasket for one 650ccs cylinder pot, one for the 795ccs cylinder pot & a couple of exhaust elbow gaskets, the inner one without a hole in it
Hope to try & rescue the situation next week plus I may push forward my plans to work on disc brake adaptor plates for the 12" wheels but that one does involve modifications to other parts so it gets more involved.

if you get it to a sensible price i can foresee me needing one again at some point.
still havent that little basket home yet..
head being skimmed this week. hoping by the time i get it home next weekend i wont be scouting out another head gasket set and skim.
i have had a tip off of an exact copy of my bis in a nearby breakers that they have put to one side so still in tact!
the good thing is they are small enough to stash a donor car somewhere on the drive..under a garden gnome or something. xmas1
thats a gnome not the evil lord of lapland

:D OK , went out for a 3 hour drive this morning in the little beast . Wanted to use as much of the dodgy petrol I had picked up as possible so did first 2 hours with low fuel light on then chickened out & filled to the brim with Esso supreme costalotta just in case it has any magic qualities  :-
So took the laser cutters in on the route as I wanted to see if they were still up and running and if I could rescue something from the gasket project. So the guy says he will get more done , might even get a set
Then I have a cunning plan so watch this space  [-/

This is an old thread but didnt get resolved.  I noticed this product now exists, did anybody try it - a copper head gasket from ricambio for 35 quid.
 http://www.ricambio.co.uk/index.php?route=product/product&path=69_72_150&product_id=829

mine is not currently blown....... but i have recently had an idea that might change that.....
