Starter Motor (Cable pull type)

I'm joining the queue for wanting a starter motor! After spending £££ changing the bushes and the switch, my old one will not turn at all - even bench tested it to no avail.
I bought a 500 one on ebay last month and it didn't fit - so i decided to put it back on and it sold for less than a third of the price i bought it for the week before!!! 

Does anyone know if you can just put on the solenoid type and it will work or are there other things you have to change. I'd still prefer the pull start type, it's just that the solenoid types appear to be more plentiful.

Sorry I cannot help but there are differences between the 500 starter motor and the 126 starter motor.

If you let us know what you are after i.e what engine, gearbox or bellhousing? It will help for locating the correct one for your car

The engine is a 652, running on a Bis gearbox with and A/C 126 bell housing. The 500 starter will not fit as the mounting bolt pattern is different.

the solenoid type will fit fine and you can wire it up to the ignition if you wish or leave it on its own and use it with a starter button. i had the pull type but it gave up and seemed so much easier to fit a solenoid type , go for it you know it makes sense!!

You should be able to pull the 126 housing off the front of the old starter and put it on the new 500 starter but what bugs me is that your one doesnt turn after all you have done.

If I could get my sticky fingers on it or if Bis13 could get his on it we could figure out what's up. Pity you sold the 500 one...

The cable starter is so simple and if the brushes and switch are new out why it isn't running sweet... might be armature but then did it look ok?

Were the brushes well spring and had to be pulled open to fit the armature?

Did the field coils look ok, didnt stink and connections to the brushes all sound?

Sounds to me almost as though the switch isn't making contact as I suspect you would have picked-up anything I mentioned above.

i had a motor go just because the plastic moulded washer wore out on the starter fork thing and made it engage then stick so that it would not disengage .

I've got a redundant one  kicking about on a spare gearbox. I can't see me converting from my solenoid starter.I'll pop 12 volts between the terminals to see if it spins OK.
I'll do you a swap of some other sh1t if you have anything manly for an a/c.

I think this is the exact problem I have just had! The cable is sticking every now and then when pulled, so could definitely have been stuck on open over night. When this happens, what burns out and is it repairable? I am having a problem with the lights, so have needed the power on and off quite frequently to try and sort it.

What do you need a/c wise norms? I have a few random spares about. Though liking the idea of the solenoid type, just wandering if there'd be enough clearance of my exhaust.

Dom, I run a solenoid starter on my Gamine, 126 engine and gearbox, no problems with the exhaust.  I use a push button to start and it works really well.  I dont think you can buy new, not sure about the cc or sc as an alternative, but may be able to cut and shunt as stated above therefore I think you will need to keep looking on ebay to get one now unless someone has one lying about. you can get nos and refurb starters easily just dont buy them off greedy b**locks on ebay! £4400.00 to you sir (plus vat)....

Norms has thrown the cable pull type another lifeline and kindly sent me an old pull type starter he had on an old engine - gonna try that this evening, then when this eventually goes kaput it will be solenoid - I've got a push button ready for when the time comes.

Guess what?

After some sanding and refitting of the starter and it's connections, with a little help from a healthy Fiesta's Battery power and some jump leads - i managed to hear the sorely missed roar of the little air cooled twin! It seems to work again!!! Yay!

I had to start it with a stick though as I am now pretty sure that the premature death of my other starter was due to the pull cable being stuck in the on position, burning the starter out.

I now need to re-fit the starter cable, fit the speedo cable, sort the wiring for the headlights/indicators and hopefully I will have it through the MOT for another year of driving pleasure!

Hi there, try 'premier-factors' on ebay. I bought 652cc cable type starter new polish built, works beautifully, it was £68.00 inclusive of carriage! He hasn't got any on there at the moment but he might be able to get one for you. Hope it helps.
