DISC BRAKE ADAPTOR PLATES FOR 126
« on: June 17, 2009, 01:49:53 PM »
:) After much research :study:, gathering brake parts & head scratching  </7 I have finaly got my design for an adaptor plate at the manufacturers & subject to testing they could be in production by next week. If you have not followed my ramblings on this subject then I have spent about 12 months investigating the options for the Fiat based conversion. The best option is the set up based on the early Punto , Cinquecento & Seicento calipers & discs. Key factors Price , Availability & Fiat. Having looked at other designs I thought there was room for inprovement. Initial production set up costs & minimum order charges will mean that I will not be able to match Dajwid's under £20 option but from what I have been quoted I think I can look at a price aroud £28 which would include postage plus I can check out the holes to make sure they actualy line up with the holes in the stub axles & calipers.  </

The calipers on the Sei fill it's 13" wheels quite well so I dare say 12" would be too small

:) Hi Guys , like I said on the other thread I do not want to upstage Dajwid & his efforts so no problem with that Riz  [-/
These things are probably going to end up like London buses, can't get one for ages then loads come along at the same time "compare the merecat"  ;)
Just to recap , I have been running a "bought in" Disc Brake set up since last October on my '72 500L with standard 12" wheels. The whole lot now retails at about £530 inc delivery . By far the biggest investment on my car but it got me out of a hole at the time & kept a car that has been on the road since 1972 , 99,000 miles & still going strong. I am still on a learning curve but the more I found out about conversions the more I realised that the set up I have is quite a hybred thing, that some conversions are positively agricultural and some descriptions of DIY jobs were quite scary as they seemed to involve extensive use of an angle grinder
As I like to solve problems myself & have in the past manufactured parts for Sunbeam Talbots, Morris Minors & Austin Healeys when I had access to the equipment I wanted to bust the mystery of the Disc Brake conversion for the baby Fiats.
So as an ex design draughtsman I thought that the designs I had seen looked functional but perhaps designed on a beer mat after a few Vodka shots had gone down
Phase one looks like it is pretty much sorted, that is the most economical conversion using Fiat parts. Cinquecento , Seicento , Punto brakes which require 13" wheels from those cars or from a Panda or Uno.
Phase two is to look at a set up to suit the 12" wheels. This will be more expensive as there are no stock discs that will do this job & additional machining will be required.
So I know my school report will say "Must try harder" but I am working on it !  ;D

:) OK been to see the laser cutting man this morning to get a prototype plate for a slightly smaller disc , 228 mms , & at the same time ordered a small number of the adaptor plates for the standard Cinque / Seicento / Punto set up which can be available this week. This set up is for the 13" rims & it looks like the smaller discs will require specialist machining so costs will go up unless you have got a reasonable size lathe in your garage.

Just to add to this for those that don't know, the Sei/Cinq standard front discs are 240mm.

;D I resisted the temptation this morning to throw back the sun roof & go out on a "mission". Instead I stripped down the expensive disc brake conversion that I had bought last year to see what was required to get a set up that will suit 12" wheels. All very interesting to me </3
Findings were Punto / Seicento / Cinquecento calipers , modified & machined caliper carriers , custom made adaptor mounting plate which I was pleased to discover was virtualy identical to the one I designed on my drawing board yesterday  </,
machined down brake disc, machined wheel hub & I believe specialy modified disc pads. So nothing to it really !  ::)
That is without the special fasteners & connections that are required. So if you are looking at a disc brake upgrade then you can see the appeal of the 13" rim option as after that the cost is going to go up big time but I am still looking at it to see if there is any wriggle room  :study:
In the meantime I will just keep on  **-

Hi all, just joined, very interested in a set of adaptor plates for the disc brake conversion. I have a set of cc calipers ready to go.  Fitting either cc sporting alloys or 14" with 175 x50 tyres.  Are there any more available?
