Convert to Electric start?? is this possible

Peeps....

Advice and guidance pls - i have a J reg BIS..although currently i am not having too many starting problems...i turn the key it goes quiet then begins splutter to a start...

i was wondering if i was to convert to electric start how to do this...has anyone done this please? This is a more reliable way of starting the car right?

What parts should we get/use (cost?)
How easy or difficult is this to change?
Does anyone have step by step instructions?

It has electric start already, turn the key, starter motor turns over the engine and it starts.

Are you talking about electronic ignition??

I assume the starter motor is OK? Plugs, leads, points, timing? Try these first if it doesn't help I am sure one of our 'watersports' (bis)  boys will be along to help.

Yes - sorry i am talking electric ignition (you can always spot the non techincal guys  can't you)   

All other bits are gonna get serviced ...so it may not be anything to worry about...just wondering how expensive/cheap it may be and how easy or  difficult a task it may be.

electronic ignitions are very expensive and not really necesary.. you can make it start more easily by installing a relay to connect 12v directly to the coil while the starter motor is engaged. an auto electrician should know what I'm talking about. just make sure they know the original power wire to the coil is a resistive wire.

the way it works is that the coil is designed to work with about 6V then a resistor is wired in so you can connect it to 12v. in some cars the wiring gets a bit old and dodgy and when your starter motor is running it can take a few volts away from the rest of the car (do your panel lights go dim when youre starting the motor?). the only part of the car's electrics that is important while your starter motor is running is the coil, so you can overcome the problem by bypassing the resistor with a relay that is triggered by the same wire that triggers the solenoid on the starter motor. in a 126 the resistor is long wire (which doesnt look like a resistor) so your best bet is to run a new 12v line up from the starter motor or the alternator. Even though it's a short distance I suggest installing an in-line fuse at the beginning of the 12v wire because we nearly had a fire in a 126 with a wire like that which shorted out on the motor.



I just read your description of the problem again..
when you say it goes quiet, do you mean no sound at all when you turn the key? just a quiet click? or a loud metallic click? or do you mean the engine turns over but wont start? that mod I just explained is for if the engine turns over but wont start..
