New from East Grinstead
« on: March 30, 2009, 05:10:20 PM »
So, following on from my wanted post, there is now a white 126 scampering around East Grinstead - what fun!

Couple of technical questions that would be a great help - the previous owner has popped in new LHD headlights but there seem to be some rubbers or seals missing from these as there is quite a large gap that goes into the cavity behind.  I am thinking that rain, salt etc could see a fast deterioration.  Should there be something here and if so where would I get some from?

Also what oil to use for engine, gearbox and axles, to get best results?  This BIS has been dry stored for 10 years and so is something of a timewarp with under 6500 on the clock (MOTs show an average mileage of 500 odd per year and the condition supports this).

Are there other basic remedial but obvious things I should be looking for/doing to ensure that everything is OK?  There were no advisories of note at the MOT, but I have read in the forum somewhere that head gaskets can be an issue...  Nothing too scarey, though, please!

Thanks for any help to start off.   [-/

OK scrap it!! We all know that car!!

 :D :D :D :D :D

Only joking!! ;D

Welcome to the forum. On the back of the lights should be a plastic cover, around the lights has a plastic surround but even with it fitted it looks like there is a bit missing.

As for other Bis questions I am sure Bis people will be along very soon to help you.

Thanks guys.  Hopefully the miles are nearly genuine, at least!

Hy. originally you get a black plastic behind the headlights, some people fitted some plastic masks round the lamps, but this is not standard, as for oil, i use mobil 15w/40, works just fine, as for gearbox, i used std gbox/diff oil...
what you should check.. hmm... if you want your bis to run happily for some time try this:
-change the plugs, check the plug wires and ignition coil (these rusted away in my case, even though theyre made from copper)
check and set the points if needed
check the thermostat
check the thermo swhitch on the rad-fan
check the brakes, kingpins, tyres...
replace the coolant and brake fluid if old
check and cover any rust you might find...
im running out of ideas, anyway, these are all things i had to fix/replace on my bis after they broken down, so you should check to se if everything is OK.
hope you have fun with your BIS. Gordan  [-/

I spotted a spare pair of those black plastic headlamp surrounds if yours are missing.

righto go to this site and select english by clicking on the flag , then enter the online shop, here select "lighting fiat 126" and look at part no.344899 they are 7.70 euros and are worth getting i have these on my car and work much better than the cruddy black plastic things that come originally attached to the car.
