Just become the proud owner of a 126 BIS here in sunny Gozo - reistration number is 'THE 126' so even personalised! What a hoot to drive too, I do have a problem with it though already, water coming out of filler cap when hot. Any ideas??

The water cap. What surprises me is if a squeeze the rad hose air moves freely in / out the filler cap, isn't the system pressurised on a 126?

is it overheating? then that is why your getting it coming out , if not do yourself a favour and bleed it using the little tap under the front bonnet (on the left when facing the car) as you might have an airlock somewhere . if it is getting overhot then check to see if you are getting an emulsion in your oil under the filler cap it could be youve got headgasket failure. if no emulsion then make sure your thermostat is working then make sure your fan is working and kicking in at the right temperature. dont worry as its just a process of illimination if you have problems just get back here and explain what you have tried and what you dont understand as there are a host of "bis experts" in our midst.

Thanks for the welcome and I have bought the car from a friend of mine who has had this problem for a while actually and told me it's a BIS thing! I have bled the red pipe at the front etc and pretty much feel like it's an everyday thing to top up the water. Friends wife boiled it once so head has been skimmed and I am confident it's not the head gasket again. Thermostat was junked ages ago so that is not an issue, fan is working OK. What bothers me is that the expansion bottle / filler cap seems to have no pressure integrity, as I say I can squeeze the big rad hoses and air goes in/out the filler cap without restriction  - seems like the problem to me but want some expert back up!

has the cap got a plastic washer on it? as it sounds like you have no seal there.

Yes there is a rubber gasket on the cap but as I say the hole in the middle (which the gasket would seal off if a relief valve) is free flowing so the gasket is pointless.
BTY I have started another thread on this subject on '126 Chat' as I thought it more appropriate than the introduction page.
