Bis - aircooled discussion (and some rust : ) )

oh yeah, the golfs a real beauty, those rims are pirreli right?
(my uncle had a golf, a few other vw-s and i remember his golfs headgasket going almost 10 years back, and it costed like 2000 Deutsch marks (about a 1000E to replace in a shop in germany)... not sure what could be so expensive...

Reading this post it would seem that it is a waste of time getting my Bis repaired! 

I have owned both and have had problems with them equally.  I think it all comes down to maintaining them.  People would ignor the cooling system on a Bis and when one part stops working......gasket goes! 

I like the Bis because it is a crap car, the engine is dodgy but you have to look after it.  I have always liked the idea of keeping things going that others tend to think is a waste of time and go for something they don't have to worry about but we shall leave this to the mainstreme car owners!

Both aircooled and Bis are great little cars but as an old classic car they need maintaning and if this does not happen they fail.

You really can't compare the two cars as they are completley different apart from what they look like.

This topic is a bit annoying now, we love the 126 in whatever form it is in, it was part of the production run and development of the car as a club I don't know why we have to slag off different models, which ever you have just enjoy it!

If you are worried about it that much get rid of the 126 and get something else and can we please start a thread on how to maintain instead of "mine is better that yours".

 </1 You have to think about these things taking into account the bigger picture. That started with the invention of the internal combustion engine well over 100 years ago. The reason why web sites , forums , car clubs and so on exist is the passion of the "Motorist" for what a vehicle can bring. Wether you drive or own a Ferrari, Norton, Scammel or a Fiat we are all bonded by what they mean to us. Could be transportation , frustration , a thrill, a thing of beauty , an ugly beast , giver of freedom , drain on your wallet and a million other things. If anyone is embarrassed by their vehicle then you can just change it but if you drive a 126 of any type you are now driving a classic car. I met up with a guy in a nearby town recently to hand over some parts he wanted & just having two cars parked side by side , one a Bis , drew some attention then when we headed off it was great just to have the cars side by side on the one way system for a brief moment.
When it comes to arguements & bickering who are the very worst ? Family of course !
The Bis / Air cooled issue is now part of the family tree of motoring so keep on fighting as it just shows that you love the one you're with but you should know that when it comes to a re union or see another bro or sis out on the road you will feel the warmth  :

Ha ha ha, Bis V Aircooled is back again. 

This will always be a subject that pops up from time to time.

AC = Slower, Noisy, less practical as far as boot goes, But more reliable and quirky.

WC = Faster, bigger boot, still quirky but in a different way.

126 = Slow, too small, Unsafe, Fun to drive easy to work on and Cheap.

I love aircooled 126s Never had a Bis but driven a few, I love the roar (splutter) of an aircooled, but if I see another 126 Bis, air, soft top, tuned to hell, rusty It still puts a smile on my face whatever the type. we are all mad for driving such zanny cars, but love them never the less.

So it doesn't matter what type of 126 they are all great (Just aircooled are better)

I hope none of theese replies post a wrong picture, we all (well i do) love both the aircooled and the bis model. I found this thread to be a fun timekiller, and nothing more, i wouldnt change my bis for anything else (not even an aircooled) but im planning to put a chrome bumpered aircooled right next to my bis in the foreseeable future. So dont see this thread as a negative argument, see it as a friendly discussion.

God if we cannot wind each other up a bit over our cars we might as well start separate websites!

Most of the replies I have seen have seen respect to both models regardless of what you own.

Fiat mean Fix It Again Tomoorow... regardless of model.

My air cooled will not overheat but the sodding points have given me headaches lately and the heater draws whatever fumes might decide to populate the engine bay into the car!

I could take a washing machine to the tip in the BIS but didn't have the confidence to drive too far with it and frankly stalled when I realised I wanted to boost performance, just because I can.

Rather than getting annoyed, just join in because it's fun!

right thats it air cooled owners meet me at clackets lane and we will move  to wipe out the bis monster that rears its ugly head in the north if it gets ugly up there we can always retreat knowing they wont be able to keep up due to overheating lol.
