Hino Contessa
Hino Contessa Coupe (1966)
Hino is still known for trucks, but in the late 1950s, it manufactured cars under licence from Renault. In the 1960s, it developed its own model, combining Renault design principles (mainly consisting of putting the engine in the back and making it handle really badly) with a European-designed body. One New Zealand journalist (the Contessa was assembled there from Japanese kits) accused the car of trying to kill him with its wayward handling (only he did not use the word "car"). The Contessa was the only model Hino ever came up with, as the company was taken over by Toyota and told to concentrate on trucks.
