In everybodies opinion what is the best way to get a bit of extra power from the 650 motor?
theres a stretch of highway where the speed limit is 100kmh and while i was driving the niki to work she would sit just north of 80-85kmhs, what could i do to make it easier to just cruise along.
Any ideas?

replace the mechanical fuel pump with an electrical one=less frictional loss

performence air filter/exhaust

chuck the back seat out..

loose the side mirrors

perspex side+rears window

and have a big dump....

The 650 aircooled should be good for 65-70+mph on a flat road with no strong head winds.
assuming the engines in good condition try re-setting/replacing the points > then the plugs > then the ignition timing and see if that improves the performance.
Theres lots of performance bits available but the cost outways the performance and usually makes the engine more un-reliable, as Stuey said fit an electric pump makes the car easier to start. but each to there own.

be carefull with modding for performance....the aircooled is a rattly little thing and anything fitted as an aftermarket mod will usually sucumb to the vibrations of the engine......its an expensive never ending quest,and you end up with an unreliable and at the most 40bhp toy.....

keep it standerd and well serviced....thats my advice....

hey thanks dom !!....the original buzzbomb was sold with buzz 2...i dunno whats happened to either of them.....the yellow one was aparently going to be fitted with a bike engin and raced....the blue i heard last was being stripped and rebuilt with leather interiour etc.....

over here(malaysia) there are no 126's very very few 500's, more 600 and 850 sports etc.....at the moment im after 1974 124 special t twin cam 1600....

hows your 500 going?

500 is going pretty good. Still shabby bodywork, but engine has been a steady upgrading exercise and as you say its an expensive never ending quest!

126 not so good - has still been sat in drive for nearly 2 years now!

Rally spec 124s are gorgeous cars - good luck in your quest

ah this 124 isnt in rally spec its a one owner minter with the 1600 twin cam motor....one old man owner......

Where can u get performance exhaust for a 126 in the uk & also what Air Filters fit, could u just modify a K&N Filter to fit?

In the UK, performance (and parts in general) are way overpriced, but you can get performance exhausts from places like

They are primarily Fiat 500 specialists, but the exhaust would be the same for an air cooled 126. Bis tuning parts are harder to source.

If you do not want to order from Italy, Germany or Poland I'd recommend checking eBay regularly. Though i wouldn't even think about buying my parts from the UK, unless I need a small part urgently (I.e. a brake cylinder for MOT) I always use the foreign companies and order through their websites - very simple and far cheaper than UK prices.

Regarding the air filter, you could modify a K&N style filter. There wouldn't be too much gain from this however as you would still be running the stock carb. Many people do mount a small K&N style filter directly to the top of the carb, this does benefit from being freer flowing, but at the cost of hotter air.

Axel Gerstl has good performance parts. Though a tad far away. And expensive for europeans too i'd imagine (just check out some of the prices: yikes).
Ignition timing,spark plugs, exhaust, air filter, sports cam, performance carb, upping the compression (though more work and costs more). Don't know.
Though has anyone thought of turbocharging a 650 engine? That would be mad...
