Paint confuses me at the best of times.

I have spent the last few weekends rubbing the car down and she's looking close.

Trouble is I keep finding 'spots' which need a little more rubbing of a little filler and so on.

Anyhow I went down to the local paint suppier who informs me that 2K is better...as oposed to cellulose.

Anyone had any experience with paint?

They now inform me there is a 2K primer the whole car will need to be covered in...

let me put it bluntly - if you know very little about 2k (which by the words of your post you dont) - it contains cyanide (isocyanate) and if you do not have the relevant sparying conditions (extracted booth) and an air fed mask it will kill you or cause irrepairable damge to your lungs- leave it the hell alone!

cellulouse is less forgiving so the prep must be tip top (up to 800 grit paper all over) but it can look just as good as long as youre willing to put the time in,

it youve reached this stage with cellulouse primer then i would stick with celly cos its gonna cost you a fortune to get 2k primer and all the relevant gear to do it safely...

The gear is quite pricey, might be able to hire it from somewhere though.

2k is more demanding. Cell will air dry in about 1-2 hours on a good day. 2k will need alot more than that which increases the chance of picking up dust before it dries.
This can be combatted using a curing accelerator, but this doesn't give as deep a shine as you can achieve with cell if you re-cut and respray.

Stick with the cellulose if you've already started, but keep your colour coats nice and thin.

Incedentally, 2k colour will stick to cellulose primer

I have just painted my 500 with 2k........Its dry in around 20mins...

(and I used an air fed mask....)

Water based paints however tak a long time to dry...you really need a booth to bake water based paints.

Scarey stuff here....

Put the first coat on just to cover it up and see what I have to rub more, you know how it is.

But I'm not too sure about the Celly paint as it isn't very shiny. I ran out after the first coat and believe the thinners matters quite a bit.

They said use standard thinners for the first coat and cleaning gun etc then for the last coat and best results recommended a proper Celly thinners.

I guess the proper thinners will make it shine better..

But she is now all RED!!!!!!

At last the rusty old car is beginning to raise a few eyebrows in the neighbourhood!!

you need a high gloss thinners and mix it 50/50 for all but the last coat where I'd put 70% thinners 30% paint this will give it a longer drying time and allow it to run out and look shinier....
