ROUGH VALUE FOR A AIR COOLED 126
« on: May 16, 2008, 10:10:24 PM »
Hi all i've just joined the forum  .. I've been looking on here for a while its awesome for information on these little cars.. I run my own garage in mid Dorset, I've found a '86' 126 FSM in good overall condition, little bits of rust below the front and rear screens and on the o/s A pillar but underneath it looks very solid. It has 4 new tyres and has only done about 100 since its last MOT. The tax and mot has now run out. The owner wants to sell it but has no idea of price.. I know its a very hard question to answer but i really don't know what its worth and was wondering if you lot could give me some idea what to offer him.................

Hi and welcome to the forum!
That is a very difficult question, all I know is that 126 prices are on the up! I would estimate something like £200-£500??
Best bet is to go on to ebay this is where most 126's are sold and just keep note of similar models and condition final prices.

Welcome to the forum, Brother.

Like you say, it is a difficult question to answer. I'm fairly new to all this malaki, but my excellent condition 1987 FSM Aircooled cost me £275 recently on Ebay. Mine had MOT, no tax, and shagged big ends. Replacement engine cost £65.

Hopefully a few others may  follow suit and give you some idea how much it's worth.

Good luck......Norman

cor your only 15miles from me! when i get one we will have to meet... The car i've found does come with 3 spare engines and loads of other parts which will come in handy.. I've been looking on ebay but there only seems to be BIS's on there at the monment. I really want a air cooled one...

Dear IPJ,
Now that would make good manly sense to meet up eventually.I've not seen another 126 since I got mine. I suppose everyone on the forum are scattered about all over the country, so the chances of seeing another whilst out cruising is probably quite slim.

I like the the Aircooled ones as they are a but more "Punchy", in that they sound a bit like a VW beetle. However, the hatch-back on the Bis looks really useful.

So where abouts in Dorset are you based? Blandford perhaps?

Respect....Norman

Hi Noram, i'm between Blandford and Dorchester on the A354... I like the look of the air cooled, also the engine looks loads easier to work on.......Have done many mods too your 126?

Nah, not really. It's a bog standard one apart from fitting electronic ignition.
There's still plenty of little jobs to get sorted on it...but it's legal, and runs OK. Just as well, 'cos my Fiat Ulysse, (or Useless as my garage refers to it) is due an MOT. Now that really is a pain in the arse of a car. If anyone ever gets offered one....turn it down. It's a piece of human Excrement, and periodically cleans my bank account out whenever work needs doing on it.
At least you know exactly where you stand with a 126. A piece of Papyrus to work on, and dirt cheap parts. Women of the opposite sex absolutely love them, except my Old Lady, who absolutely would not be seen dead in it. Maybe she realises what a 'Jack & Danny' magnet they are?

Regards.....Norms
