fiat 126 engine in my fiat 500

hello there the starter motor i can confirm is on the distribiter side..

i have some video of my engine and some new photos if anyone would like them? via email ?

the man that told me i had a 126 engine, also definately that i had a 126 gearbox aswell ..  he had grown up with 500's he told me . so i trust his judegment ..

so if i did have a 126 gearbox and engine a stright swap is easy ?

and do u recommend gearbox and engine change in one ?

i have sorced some new engine numbers

it actually reads  fiat 126 a  ( then some zeros )  .. dont know how many as there is a bracket in the way and its hard to read further


furthermore i have also studdied the picture of the underneath of the 126 box, and it does look alot like my car

The problem you will now find is that your 126 gearbox which is fitted to your 500 has been adapted and fitted with 500 drive shafts. So if the gearbox is ok carry on using it with the new engine!

Remove the engine and gearbox together in one unit, when removed from the car, split the engine from the gearbox, this will also give you a chance to check if the clutch is ok and replace it if necessary.

Fit the new engine onto the old gearbox (if it's ok?) and then replace the engine and gearbox together back into the car.

im not removing it just yet, not unless it goes on me

i do know that it jumps out of first gear ( and clunks loud when does so )

and i been told this is a first sign of the gearbox going ?


.. although pulling off in 2nd is more than easy, its of course not ideal ...


i mainly asked all the above questions to find out , if i did indeed have a 126 engine and if so, if needed would a swap be quite easy ...

and from all your help and advice with help if needed , i know now i could have a stab... or failing that pay someone ..

so if you know of a aircooled 126 engine and gearbox going... whether its on a car or out .. and its cheap.. can somebody give me a shout .. im in leicester as you know .....

obvoisly im without a transporter, so a car with four wheels i could drive or tow would be a advantage .....

or if cheap enough i could borrow my mates car and trailer ....

or get it delivered to me ....

Hello chaps the wee car is a 500 f with 500 L nudge bars.The 500R had the FIAT  oblong badge on the front panel and were only available in left hand drive(they wernt sold in the UK.)Hope this helps a bit.

Hi all, been a while since i have been here, sorry..............
I had a 126 with a 595cc lump in it and when i swapped it for a throbbing 650 i suffered no problems, to the best of my knowledge the only difference is the size of the bores 67mm to 70mm if memory serves correct (been along time thou).  I am fairly sure there are no further differences, try the 500 forum (hurts to say it...) http://www.fiat500club.org.uk/ they have pretty much every 126 lumps shoe horned in 500's.

Hi chris soz its been so long, the 126's are in a lil trouble, poppy i think i shall have to make a descision on her fate soon, but buttercup is currently awaiting a cleaned carb and a lil tlc.  And yes there isnt much difference between the bore of the 595 and the 650 as there is only 25cc (ml's) difference in each bore.  The wife and myself are well but work is dull as ever, it just gets in the way of a good social life, do we now have a time of the week to meet in the forum?  chat soon shagmeister
