Second Engine Tuning
« on: March 25, 2008, 11:26:19 PM »
Hi guys,

I have this other engine sitting in my shed and i was thinking of just getting a sport cam, different carb and skimming the head a bit.  Maybe also lightening the flywheel.  Any ideas of how much to skim + other recomendations?
Also i coooould re-bore the cylinders to 700cc but it starts to get pricey then.

Do i have to make any other changes when skimming the head?

Cheers guys.

I think if you skim the head 2mm you also have to shorten the pushrod tubes?

good ol' dave! i did actually look back at those threads but i didnt really think they arrived at a definative answer.  I was thinking i might take off about 1.5 - 2mm.

For a cheap big bore upgrade you could try a couple of VW aircooled pistons and barrels, that gives you 800cc. You need to do some chopping and the crankcase will need boreing out, I think www.126fan.pl shows how to do it.

Thats worth considering, it would be a bit of challenge for me.
I was checking out your site earlier to see what people had done to their engines there.  They prob spent a fair bit more than i want to for now.

when i skimmed the head on mine,i used standard polish full length tubes with early 500 rubbers at one end(thin red ones) and polish 650 at the other, all joints cleaned with thinners then ''buttered'' with silicon sealent  to seal them up.any questions just pm me and i'll help all i can.. :D

Thanks dave thats nice and simple.  I have been considering carbs and i was wondering about a dellorto fzd 32.28 or a solex 32 pbic.
Hope you are enjoying KL.  My girlfriends family know a few people there.  One of them took a lambo countach with him!!  Your 126 would have been cooler.

Hi Tomasz

I've skimmed 1.1mm off my Panda Head, and I have to Use Premium grade Petrol with a Little Octane Booster added or Else I get Pinking, so I wouldn't go Past 1.0mm another time. I've now fitted my Dellorto 40 DHLA Carb. instead of the Solex one and the Difference was amazing, it made the Engine real Smooth and No flat spots when accelerating Just Smooth and Powerfull. I'm next going to fit a 40/80 Cam. as I'm assured that's the one to go for by Toto, and He's been right on everything Else so Far, so He Know's what He's Talking about.  The Heat is getting Real Hot now even with a Cav-Mac Cam cover and Big Abarth Sump for oil cooling, thinking a Oil Cooler is the way to go.

Have you tried a slightly colder plug? This helped cure pinking on mine.

Cheers jon thats good to know as i was wondering what the difference would be.  I have a bis weber fitted at the moment and i found that to be a slight improvement over the solex in terms of smoothness but not power.
