Yet another from Northern Ireland!!

Been on the site fairly regularly, but recently there seems to be more and more from Northern Ireland which is great.
Ive been looking for a cheap Fiat 126 to do up 'as a project' for a while now.  I once asked for a quote for bringing a fiat 126 air cooled from England which I saw on Ebay 'needs a bit of work to get through MOT' , worth about 150 quid, from one of the car transporters, and got quoted about ?1000 quid!!
Obviously all the bargains here are either hiding away in someone's garage/barn/field or have been a victim of the MOT as I havent seen any advertised at all.

While Im on, as I would only really want a Fiat 126 as a second car, I would be interested in knowing how much the insurance is here?

Hi Gary good to have you on here!, your best bet is to speak to Paul Harbinson, hes a mechanic in NI, he will most propbably see this message as he come son often, you should have a good chat with him, we have loads and loads of NI forum members, a couple of months ago i didnt know of any then i met Paul on here and ever since the number has increased brilliantly!!! i have sent you a PM with Pauls email address.

It looks like the 126 is the car to have in Northern Ireland lately!
Have you considered getting one from the UK mainland and driving it back?

There was one in Fishguard, Wales in the for sale section. Not to far in the ferry.

I've also been considering bringing one over from GB.  I've been quoted about ?300 for insurance as a second car by my present insurer.

Hi Gary, my God where are all these N.I fans coming from.You might be lucky and get a aircooled over here,you just need to keep a keen eye out in the Belfast Telegraph or the auto trader.Dont panic they are out there,usually in a garage with about an inch of dust on them.I got mine in Portglenone!Well here give me a shout Chris gave you my my e-mail address and I will give you my phone number.Cheers Paul.

Why is Irelands MOT so tough? to fit in with the EU law?

It seems to be holding everyone back from getting a 126 is this true? its such a shame!

To tell you the truth Chris I think th e new test which came on line about eighteen months ago is handier than the old one.A lot of the human element has been removed,so if your headlights,brakes,shocks and emisions are ok it'll fly through .But seriously it is easier,the are guys from the trade leaving to go to MOT test centres (they are looking fifty people at the minute as the MOT is coming down from four years to three and then every year after that).The Republics test is very similar (they call it the NCT test) but they only have to test their cars every two years.

I wish our MOt was tough on certain cars, namely big old dirty un maintained deisels. Why should we suffer? when our 126's are so small. I read somewhere that 500's and similar small cars pump out just as much polution as large cars(is this true?) so shouldnt escape what all large car owners endure.

Maybe a few years ago Chris but not anymore.These latest Jags are almost at zero emissions,most of what comes out the tail pipes these days is water vapour (you could give yourself a facial).We are now at Euro four emission stage,I think euro five is absolutly zero emissions which comes in force in a couple of years (don't panic it only applies to new cars).Cars arn't the problem any more with pollution,its the factorys and countrys that produce them,namely China and the United States :x .You can screw your emissions right down on the 126 but that would be foolhardy as beleive it or not the car would run bad and use more fuel.I adjust my co down to 1.5 for MOT then when its through adjust it back up to about 4.5 to 5%.Runs like a swiss cookoo clock .Well I will be off line from tomorrow for ten days,off on my jollies.I'll catch up on my return,cheers Paul.
