A "Hello" from deepest, darkest, Dorset

Hello Comarades.

A 126 Newbie here. I've just aquired a 1987 FSM aircooled 126. I've been told that the Big-ends need sorting. I just hope it's a relatively straightforward job. Please tell me that it is?

Kind Regards....

hi Norms, welcome to fiat126uk.

first thing is to make sure that it is the big ends, symptons range from a mild tap-tap-tap to machine gun RAT-TAT-TAT-TAT if they are really shot.

its a fairly easy job to just change the shells(bearings) but often a false economy if the cranksahft is worn/scored or the cause of the problem lies elsewhere, ie; oil pump/oilway blocked, there is also a small drilling on the crankshaft with a plug that is prone to coming adrift

but very basically you need to,

remove the engine from car

remove the sump

remove the big end caps, do not mix them up as they are machined as a unit with the rod

inspect the crank for scoring, measure with micrometer to check it is within tolerance for wear

dry assemble with new shells with plastigauge, strip and check clearance using plastigauge

reassemble with lube and torque up BE caps

replace sump and put engine back in car and drive about with a smile :D  on your face.

if you do decide to do this yourself then come back to us for a more comprehensive guide

Thankyou Maddog for your prompt reply.
You clearly point out that there may well be an underlying cause for the bearing failure, rather than just "wear & tear".
The knocking noise only seems really bad when the car's nicely warmed-up.On starting, it's a bit noisy, but otherwise not too bad.
Maybe I should consider replacing just the shells this time, and closely monitor how long the new ones take to die. Hopefully, by this time,my confidence in really getting to grips with manly engine removal will have improved.

Kind Regards.......Norms

:?: This thread has hit on something that has been going through my mind for a while. That is that the bottom end on a Fiat aircooled engine seems to be very robust and whilst pistons & barrels seem to get replaced bottom end bearings seem to go on & on. Is this the case or am I just hoping ? Also I assume that the good old oil pressure light is a useful indication of engine condition.

Well put together maddog!
Just to clarify make sure all the bearing caps go on the same way as you took them off and not 180 degrees out.
Bearing come in various sizes, so make sure you order the correct ones!

and welcome to the forum!
 :)

forgot to mention that you might want to check/clean your oil filter, because of the awkwardness of design they rarely get looked at and a clogged up filter will cause low pressure, if it is only a slight tap when hot then that and some slightly thicker oil might see you through a few more miles,

So chaps,

How do you measure up the new ones? Is it simply a case of removing the old bearings, and offering them up against new ones?
