Does anyone know the part number (and where I can easily get some) adjustable spax shocks for my BIS? I have some lowered rears enroute (cheers doug)

(or if any one has a better alternative LMK)

any help deeply appreciated

Spax don't seem to have a listing for the 126 and koni only list a classic shock absorber, i'm sure there is a shorter shocker that would fit the bis rears so when you cut the spring down it dos'nt fall out, but i'm still looking. i bought a set of 19cm ride height springs from 500mania but the shortened shockers that you need, only fit the 500/126 aircooled.

Hi Stuey. i think they will be standard height and a special, thats probley why there not listed in the car section, when i fitted the 19cm springs the first bump and i reckon the springs would jump out. if you look at

they do a short shocker to be used with there 19cm spring but they don't have the round eyelet on the bottom end, i've been trying to find a site on the web that has the specification of the open and closed lenghs of car shocks but to no avail yet.

cant you use some old shocks and try "drill and fill"

Hi Mick the problem isnt stiffer damping that would be a bonus. when you cut one coil of the standard spring using the standard shocks, when you tighten the top and bottom mount it does not compress the spring into the coil spring mounts, so if the rear wheels lift, the spring is loose and would fail an MOT, i think Stuey has cut 1.5 coils off so has no chance of pulling the spring onto there mounts so we are looking for a shocker thats about 2" shorter but the same lengh when compressed

yes but if you reduce the amount of fluid in the damper wont that lower it? and still hold it together? another thought is if you fasten the spring to the seat?

i havent had a look at my bis shocks in a long while but is the upper cover/shroud on the shock removable??
assuming so, you may be able to grind off the inner stop or nut (i dont know which is on the underside the shroud)
so that the shroud can slide down the inner shaft of the shock

please bear with me this is hard to describe without pictures!!

then with a dye you can thread the inner shaft/rod of the shock down further once the threads dont go inside the seals when compressed(the spring wont allow the shock to compress fully so you actually have quite alot of room for threading) you should be ok then remove the shroud and any swarf etc and thread down a nut to the last leaving the shroud off replace the shock (with the first nut threaded down fully!) then with a mate inside the car tightening the normal shock top nut until you take up a slight tension on the spring you can spin the first nut up to meet the body this is your "required height" mark the rod below the nut in case it moves remove the top nut allow the arm to drop down again replace the shroud (you can put a locknut on the outer side of the shroud to hold it in place this is optional but remember to consider the height of the nut on your initial measure up!) pop it back in and go for a spin!!!

it works for lowering vespa's with cut springs!! remember they wont be any harder unless you do as Mick says! :twisted:

i understand what you mean, if i were still in engineering i would have had ago, there has to be an adjustable shocker on the market that will suit our purpose. when it gets a little warmer i'll take one off and do some measuring and Email Spax, Koni, and see if they can suggest a suitable shocker.

pedro is it shortened rears you are after? if it is i have a set of spax adjustable 9 1/2" (at full stretch) rear shocks for my 126 I can give you the part number if this will help?

I believe from memory they were special builds for lowered beam axle modified minis, thats if my memroy serves me correctly

Stuey. not quite sure what lengh of shocker i need yet, at the moment i have been running with one coil removed and the std bis shock just clamps the spring although a shorter shock by about -1 inch would seat the spring better, i noticed in the garage section that you have cut your rears down to 15cm which is very low, do the spax you have clamp the spring into the seats? if so i think they will be a bit short for the 19cm abarth progressive springs that i bought. do post the spax part number you have, as i'm sure it will help someone out, when it stops raining, snowing, gale force winds

i might get a chance to get under the car again.
