VW powered Bottle-Rocket!
« on: November 24, 2007, 12:20:58 PM »
I'm looking to make a VW powered Fiat 126
(I can hear the tuts of disappointment from the purists!)
I've seen it done with a Fiat 500 and i've heard it isn't TOO much of a pain in the arse to do!
so if anyone has done this or knows how to or has any info whatsoever it would be greatly appreciated
Thanks, Si. :D

Hi doglog,

Can I ask you what is the point in putting VW Beetle engine into the 126?

From my point of view the disadvantages of using the VW engine are:
- the design of this engine is as old as original unit
- max power is not impressive at all
- they are thirsty and unreliable (when compared to newer designs)

I would think that using fiat fire engine is much better idea.

They fit within the boundaries of body, the output is from 45hp up to 100hp as standard and the know how about using them in 126 is greater which means that most of the problems you will come across has already been solved.

I know that maybe beetle engine is more exciting but it might cause much more troubles and the final effect will be comparable.

I hope you will succeed with your project and show photos from building your 126 on this forum.

Best regards,

Mali

ps. what is the mass of the beetle engine?

Im really interested in engine swaps so keep us updated.  I dont have enough mechanical knowledge to do one yet but i think i may in the future.  I guess one of the advantages of the beetle engine is that it is also aircooled so no probs with the radiator but i guess with an engine swap fitting a radiator would be the least of your probs anyway!  There are a lot of tuning parts for vdub engines.

Try telling that to the guys running low 10's and 11's down the strip with VW engines

The VW engine is very tuneable, the parts are easily available and the gearboxes can be built to take 400bhp +

It will take plenty of chopping and custom fabrication but not impossible. Sounds like a great project, keep us informed. Give me a shout if there is any thing I can help with.

I had standard engine in my mind. I know that  well tuned type 4 can produce massive power.

Another question arrises: will it fit under the bonet?

Good luck doglod :smt023
