Hello from Ashton-under-Lyne, Lancs

Hi, I've just collected my first Fiat 126 Biz, a J reg which has not turned a wheel for 5 years.

It looks remarkably rot free, covered in moss and with only a small hole in the drivers sill but generally it looks pretty good (not been over it properly yet though so time will tell). It's only done 29000 miles from new.

I've bought it to do up for/with my 2 nephews so they can learn to drive in it and then use it until they get their own cars. So far I've only sat in the biz but it reminded me a lot of my forst car, a mini. Loads of space (I'm 6'2' and built for comfort, not for speed) and quite cheeky interior with a totally rubbish offset pedal position, mint!! I might even keep it one the lads get fed up with it.

If anyone has any advice about suppliers, spares, etc then I'd be happy to hear from you, cheers, Matt

p.s. the wheels might be a bit rotten/bent, are they easy to get or do other wheels fit easily?

Hi Matt, welcome to the forum. Check the links section on the home page for spares suppliers mate. The only ones to be wary of are Axel-gerstl, their site sometimes lists stock that they dont keep, but get from poland,(with a long wait for the customer apparently.). Most good motor factors will be able to source the consumables for you, the brakes are mostly common parts from the Cinquecento. the suspension King-pins,(which need greasing every 3,000mls.), will be the trickiest part to get hold of in this country, but are still readily available in other countries. Be very careful with first gear, because there is no synchromesh, and they soon wear to the point that it will pop out of gear when you engage the clutch. This then increases the wear on the two gearbox mounting brackets aswell, Good gearboxes are getting rarer all the time. If you've got rust on the sill/s, i would check very carefully in the spare wheel well also, the welded seam in the bottom is structural, and is prone to rotting from the inside out unfortunately. The main points of note with regards to the engine are these; Keep your anti-freeze topped up, and use the heater matrix bleed screw under the bonnet when you do so. Also keep it at the guideline 50/50 strength, the cooling system on these cars leaves little margin for error,(test that your engines Thermostat is working properly, although i always run without one fitted.). Lastly, use a good brand of Turbo-Diesel Engine oil, and change it regularly because there is no cartridge type oil filter on your engine. Anything else you need to know just post on here and someone will answer within a couple of days.
