Alloy wheels Part 2
« on: February 03, 2007, 05:33:48 PM »
Hi

Got some alloys for my Bis which fit nice.  They are 5j 13.
The tyres I have fitted are 155/65/13.  However they fit on the front great but they are rubbing on th body work at the back which is a pain!!

Is there anything I can do to stop this otherwise I am going to sell them on!

Any help would br great cheers!

right how much is it rubbing? and how much have you got between the tyre and  the wheel arch? divide it by two and it will give you an ideal width for a spacer. 5mm is about as close as you can go to the spring,

so the answer is use a spacer to increase the clearance between the suspension and tyre.

if its the other way if its only just rubbing on the bodywork you can roll the inner arches to increase the width , but you might have to make the suspension firmer as well.

It is rubbing on the inside but only just.  There is plenty of room between the arch and the wheel.  I bought some universal spacers today but they wont fit, where can I get some that fit my 126?

thanks for your reply

jee, sounds like some serious inset there......what rims are they? cinq? 5j should be fine on a 126 unless you have some seriously inset front wheel drive rims........also,the rear sould be running pos camber as standard,im amazed the 155 tyres are touching the inside on only 5j rims.

so they must be touching on bumps then?

is your handbrake a bit ''wobbly''?.....126's that i have are prone to that light coming on,the handbrake moves over ''in flight''

HI

Yes my handbreak is wobbley, but when I move it so it pushes the little white switch the light flickers and stays on, it has never done this until I fitted these alloys?

They are only just rubbing, near the rubber bump stop.

the handbrake thing is a coincidence, they do do that.
odd that your rims/tyres are touching near the bumpstops tho...a small spacer would do the trick maybe,...although im not a fan of them myself......or a well aimed clout on the offending panel???.sounds drastic, but no diff really to 'rolling' arches.
i must say tho,for me the aim of fitting after market/different rims,is to improve the 'foot print/track' of the car,not reduce it.it sounds like you have narrowed the track of the car, even with the wider 5j wheels.

front drive rims are more inset, because of the need for more space to engineer front drive and get a decent turning circle, but 126's are old school, and benifit most from outset rear drive rims.......most second hand rims on the market now are from front drive hatches..or XI9's(uses front drive power train mid mounted)........its getting harder to get 131/132/124 type offset rims now

Here are some pics of my alloys.  You can see where they have rubbed.

It will be a shame if I can't get them to fit cos they do look good.  More bad news is that they are rubbing on full lock at the front now but only on the drivers side!  ARRRHHH!

i have 165/55 tyres on my 5.5j rims and they do not rub, i have no spacers. I think 155/65 are too big, you want to go for either 145/65 or 155/60 to keep the standard gearing and speedo reading. that said you wheels look a lot more inside the arches that mine; the out side of my wheels are level with the arches.
