dynamo
« on: January 06, 2007, 08:16:25 PM »
I changed the voltage regulator on my 126, I fitted the dynamo one.

Battery light still on

Now the question:

A) Get the dynamo rewound, can you still get them done in the UK.

B) Buy a used dynamo (not easy).

C) put an alternator on, this would mean getting another voltage regulator. Does anyone know if it is a straight swap otherwise?

On another subject.
Car has sat for about 5-6 weeks started 1st time :D  :D A miricle.

That didn't make much sense.

My 126 has a dynamo fitted but battery light stays on. O thought (hoped) it was only the voltage regulator and bought a new dynamo one fitted it but same problem.

on the dynamo's which were on early 126's you have a black box that sits to the left of the dynamo, on the alternators the voltage regulator is attatched directly ontop of the alternator.

not sure you can interchange them?

you can replace the dynamo with an alternator (fiat 126-650) but you will have to alter the wiring, the thick red wire from the alternator goes to the starter/battery, this needs to be a direct, on the regulator there are two wires that come from the generator, the other lead from the battery should have a thin wire connected to it terminal 30, that is connected to the small terminal on the alternator this goes to the warning lamp on the dash, then you can throw the rest away or put it on ebay.
p.s. you may need to use the front mounting bracket that goes with the alternator?

Changed the regulator but still batt light stays on. Now not sure best thing to do.

New dynamo or get altinator and put up with all the hassle with wiring.

you can adjust the voltage regulator do you have a haynes manual ? perhaps the regulator just needs adjusting? when you say the light stays on is this all the time or just on tick over as the dynamo only charges when the car is moving , where as the alternator charges when the car is stationary or moving.

Ah Ha didn't know that. I only tried on tick over, revving a bit to keep it going.

The regulator is a brand new one, straight out of the box so assumed it would be OK.
