bollock5 manifold bolts
« on: November 16, 2006, 07:28:04 PM »
took head off today and both the manifold bolts snapped! tried to drill bolts out and ended up in more trouble . 1 hole is now larger than before . helicoil might be ok . but.... 2nd hole now has a bolt extractor snapped inside the original bolt which i had drilled the centre out of .... i have tried to get this out but now looks like i have gone and fcuked it good and proper.   who said changing head gaskets were easy on an aircooled?  anyone got a spare head?

When i changed the exhaut on out BIS i had this problem.  Are they snapped below the alloy of the head?

If they are lever or even better proud then get a nut slightly too big and put it flush against the head, MIG weld into the centre all you can whilst keeping the outer of the nut in shape.  With luck when sufficiently cooled you will be able to just wind the broken stud out.  (works on 2 levels, gives you something to undo it with and the heat helps too)

Worked for my head anyway, hope it helps.

hi mick,i paid £25.00 for it you can have it for that with carb/slightly frazzeled k+n aircleaner and the abarth cover plate.sound ok?

if you want i also have an alloy ''abarth''rocker cover going (proven to give 3 extra bhp  )the internal oil splash cover needs refixing tho £25.00
buy all the above and the quedos of the ex buzzbomb stage 1 tuning parts come free!!!   :smt033

also.....heres one of uncle daves tuning secrets.....shhhh...but,use the head gasket from a head set only, its 1.2mm as apposed to the full engine set at 1.8mm.now, that is good for another hamster power at the wheels......ssshhhhh

update . sunday 16h00 . stuck head back on . sorted out manifold and stuck everything back together , fired her up and cowabunga she works ok. i put my hand behind engine to feel if hollow bolts were ok and i felt exhaust fumes pushing out!!!   but.... when i covered the hollow bolt up it still blew, its the gasket on the manifold to exhaust that is blowing what a relief!!!! anyway cars going fine now but my lesson is learnt . never let chris lakin get near your car as he is a jinx!!!!

cool mick.........those elbow joints can be a pain......i use the sealent from an exhaust fitter, the stuff that fits in a skeleton gun.......ask them nicely and they flog it for a fiver, better than halfords pooe!!.

oh....as your a newbie a/c owner, dont forget to lock-tite everything and check again in a few days time eh????........they not as smooth as a bis mate  a favorite is one rocker box nut to come off,you then get oil EVERY where..........been there...........
