Author Topic: I just got my 126 Bis (Read 3477 times)

Hi,
I just bought my 1992 Bis. I drove it from Eastbourne back to London, the journey was Ok and slowly as I didn`t want to damage the engine, it seems that the last owner just drove it about 200 miles in short journeys and never went up 50MPH. Next day I found a bit of milky mucky staff in radiator water tank I have been told that is quite normal hasn`t been driven so much and after this much bigger journey some of this may happen and the temperature stays a middle range and the engine oil seems to be fine. When the engine is hot and I need to stop it and turn it on again sometimes takes a bit of time to start again.
Can someone give more advice about these pretty cute cars.
I am having it respray and all the rusty parts done.
I will send a picture whem it`s done.

Well firstly it sounds like its a good car if it made it back from eastbourne without any problems, and yes its VERY common to get a bit of milky oil in the oil filler cap. Give it a good un and see if t comes back. I had exactly the same problem and after a good run it didnt come back. Its just condensation which doenst clear if the engine isnt heated up for long enough. ( a tiny droplet of water can make the oil look very milky) but i dont think there should be any in the header tank? as this would mean oil has gt into the coolant system.

just make sure it never goes into the red on your temp gauge,

You ahve to remember with these cars, they have these niggly faults you will learnt your own tricks and tweaks to get it running exactly how you want.

It may be caused from a previous blown headgasket problem?

I would give the system a good flush out and replace with anti-freeze mix, you will then be right for winter...if we have one!

Make sure you bleed the cooling system correctly otherwise you can have major problems later on!

Keep an eye on the water level, which will confirm if you have a headgasket problem or not.

Hi Again,
The seller told me if I wanted to bleed the cooling sistem I had to unscrew oone bolt at the top of the radiator, is that right. I would appreciate if anyone could tell me how to do it.

well the way i have done it and everyone i know, is by bleeding the cork valve in the front compartment (by the heater unit), its a tube with a red stop cock on it. Get the engine running with the new coolant then undo this to let the water and air come out. and its done! Worth doing it a couple of times to be sure there is no airlock, airlocks will cause headgasket to go so its vital to bleed.
