mucking about with diff timing marks at the mo,hoping a friend is coming over to help out later......i need a higher intelligence to sort it........ :wink:

Good evening.
Timing is often discussed on the fiat 500 club site and some very good advise has been posted on their forum. The good news is that you dont actually have to be a member of their club to join the chat forum.
setting timing at idle will not sort it entirely. it will not work for timing at load or speed.
For this you need to try it at different rev ranges. set timing at idle. Then get a mate to apply the gas (a constant amount about 1/3 revs try placing a block under the pedal) and set the timing on that. Do the same again for 2/3 revs. its not perfect, but it can work with some practise, my dad used to be able do do it by ear,a very handy skill with these little motors!!

hi Michael ive always worried about timing and thought a timing light was fundemental, but since chris lewis explained that "static" timing is the best method (and was used in the factory) i cant see what the fuss is about now, its simple to do. The revs for me still complicates things though.

sorry to hear about the micra, but i would have been even more sorry if you had been in your 500! will a new door sort the car or is it bad?

guys..it was a joke...................i always set timing by ear on older motors,factory settings are useless when your using fuel that was not dreamt of then..........and your distriuter/timing chain/cam has wear in it.my dad taught me,as much advance as you can get away with.......road test hot and hill climb,retard just enough to get rid of pinking,(i have special bent 13mm spanner for this)and use the best fuel you can,i use the super unleaded from a populer garage(fresher fuel) and add castrol valve master plus..i have not checked how advanced i am from factory,but the motor runs very well at these settings.
gota add tho,im running panda 30 head,fast road cam(dialed in by nanni),40 DCOE weber carb/alquati inlet/short ram pipes and sport exhaust with lecky fuel pump with in line filter,and i nearly always run with the rear deck open,that and with big sump and oil cooler(oil capacity now nearly 5 litres) keeps the temp down,that also helps control detonation/pinking.........

no doubt there are other views on this ,but im very happy with it at the mo,easy starting hot or cold,NO pinking and a nice 1100 rpm idle.....perfect....anyway,DALEKS only really know about time travel,not timing :wink:
