my aircooled keeps loosing power and jurking after it gets hot, if i stay under 40mph it seems to be ok, but if i go over after a little while it loses power and i have to pull over to let it cool down then off i go again.

I have changed coil, condensor, plugs, checked points, and planning on fitting a new fuel pump tomorow, its really anoying.

has anyone got any suggests? it must be a fuel related problem? Carb?

would appreciate any advice.

assuming you have fitted the correct coil,i would say fuel pump could be the culprit?

Check out the bob weights in the dizzy incase they are sticky, needs the distributor out you can then set the points more accurately also check the ignition timing when you reinstall the dizzy.
Also could be carb jets clogged if it's not the petrol pump.

I'd agree that the pump and carb are prime suspects - I just cured the same symptoms by rebuilding a carb. Another might be weak mixture - check the carb is bolted on tight without any air gaps - the more you press the throttle, the more a carb is pulled to the left by the cable, opening up a gap if its not on tight.

thanks, dave, chris and paul i appreciate the help/advice

i have now replaced the fuel pump and put a new filter in, the old filter looked quite bad, and the base of the old pump looked gunky.

i took it for a long spin to get it heated up but it didnt happen, however the car needed to be really hot i.e. 30 miles @ 60mph like yesterday on the m1 before it started.

we checked timing, looked ok. I will go and check how tight the carb is.

Hi Chris. One possibility is that the fuel inlet pipe to the carb. is perilously close to a hot engine component causing fuel vapourisation of the fuel thus causing fuel starvation. This happened to me once in an air-cooled in a queue of traffic. I pushed the car to the side of the road, waited ten minutes, tried again and the engine burst into life. It was only a one off occurrence though and never happened again.
