carb cover bolt
« on: April 10, 2017, 02:57:20 PM »
The air intake over the top of my carb is kept in place by a bolt, rather than a nut.
I.e. when I remove the carb cover, this part doesn't exist:

My problem is, I think I've over-tightened the screw and destroyed the thread.

The plan is to try a replacement screw just in case it's the screw thread and not the carb hole thread.
However if it is the carb thread, plan B is to find a long screw and cut the head off it to effectively create the part shown in the picture above. I'd then just need to Loctite it into the carb hole and use a nut on the other end to hold down the cover.

My question therefore is, I don't suppose the original part shown in the picture above is removable? Or is it welded to the carb body? The fact that mine seems to be missing suggests it's a replaceable part.

This happened to me a few years back. The top cover does unscrew. You'll see about 6 or 7 flat headed screws and if you undo them the top will come off but you'll need to unhook the choke linkage which is a bit fidley. The carb body and top cover is made of what appears to be aluiminum or zinc and is very soft. I drilled it out and re-tapped a new bigger thread in

I ended up going with plan B as I described above.

Went to B&Q, they only sell metre-long screws without heads so I had to chop one down to size (with some garden wood cutters). Then I used industrial loctite to glue it into the hole in the carb. The next day I put the carb cover back on, and then with the screw protruding through, secured it down with a washer and a wing nut.

Drop back up through Scotland and it stays in place fine.
