Replacing wheel bearings...
« on: March 04, 2017, 12:54:53 PM »
Hi guys im planning on replacing both my rear wheel bearings and i was wondering how involved it is to do at home, ive had a quote from a garage to do them at £198 inc VAT which is upsetting my wallet  :P has anyone done these themselves? And how difficult is it to actually do?
Cheers!  :)

Eazy, 1stly get the bearings from a bearing seals and belt place, not Brammer bearings they are expensive, most little independents give the best prices usually a fraction of motor factor prices, the bearings will have ID markings E.G SKF 6302 marked on them failing that take them out 1st and take them to the bearing place. replacing the bearings is simple I take the hubs out give them a good clean and then warm the hubs in the oven (hence clean 1st) this causes the metal to expand, squirt some freeze spray on the bearings while its all hot and they will shrink and drop out or push a frozen sausage in it same effect, better than braying them out as sometimes they can twist and damage the housing the bearing sits in avoid heavy hammering and keep them square on the way out. To replace I put the bearings in the freezer and the hub in the oven, they usually just drop in or only need a tap, make sure they are seated correctly in the housing allow to cool and them push in the seals use a large socket and press them in in a vice ensuring they don't snag on the outside use the backface of the socket to push it in square and even, Hot and cold simple

Eh??....Oven? Freeze spray? .....sausages?...... That sounds like a right faff  ::) Danny if you remove the drum, remove driveshaft coupling bolts, then undo the big nut on the back of the hub shaft it will slide out. With that out of the way there's 4 17mm nuts staring at you from the drum end. Undo them and the bearing carrier will come off. Carefully remove the spacer, the seals and both of the outer races and the big "C" clip that holds the outer ring in. wipe out as much of the old grease and using a small drift and a hammer just tap the shoulder of the outer ring from the inside out at 4 opposing points each other each time you tap. Eventually the bearing ring will drift out easy enough - I've done loads and Never had a problem with them sticking. Replacement is just as easy and you won't need to keep your bearings in the deep freeze ready for your mum to find either. If you line the new outer ring up on the bearing carrier and place a flat peice of wood on top and tap again with a hammer to get it going you will be able to use your drift - again tapping at ether side to keep it equal it will slide down to the shoulder in no time. Or if you have a vice you can press them in by squeezing. Grease up and reassemble in the reverse order.

Start to finish will take you between an hour and a half ild say if you've never done one before. Quality branded bearings (SKF, Q&H etc) won't cost the earth, around £15 - £20 off eBay :)
