Nuts and Bolts
« on: January 27, 2017, 11:16:43 PM »
commonly overlooked nuts and bolts, well there just nuts and bolts "Right?", if you are replacing and nuts and bolts, make sure they have the correct tensile strength, failure to do so can cause them to fail which is not good if they are on suspension, brakes or steering, it's a common mistake. The tensile strength of a bolt is marked on the head 4.6 is soft, 8.8 is harder but still soft and 12 is better, also people fit threaded bolts where shoulder bolts were originally used, this reduces contact area and accelerates wear and failure, if in doubt get the right bolt, not that one in the shed that looks like it fits, fit the right bolt for the application, as for nuts the type of nut is relevant to it's application anti-vibration or otherwise, get the right nut, again not the one in the shed that looks like it fits and don't re-use Nylocks if possible the action of taking them off a rusty bolt reduces their ability to retain their grip, if in doubt chuck it out, bolt and nuts are pennies go to a local nut and bolt distributor, they can advise and get you the right stuff, if in doubt use nutlock  and NOT BEARING FIT to retain your nuts.
