Exhaust explosions at morning start
« on: January 03, 2017, 03:36:08 PM »
Hey there!

Happy new year yo everybody. Im having big explosion in the exhaust every morning that i try to start the car, eventually it will start, but not before the explosion.

I have set the timing of the engine as described in the shop manual, have adjusted the gap of the contact breaker to 0.50mm, i have also maked some adjustments to the carburator, but despite all of this i continue to have explosions .. i dont know what is the cause of this problem..

Thank you all

What fuel are you running on? leaded or unleaded or unleaded with additive, if you set the timing to factory standard this was for when leaded was in use, leaded and unleaded have differing octanes and burn rates this essentially throws the timing out

  • It's not the carb size that matters, it's the jet

In what condition is the carb? Does it take long to start?
Looks like you get a lot of unburnt fuel in your exhaust.
Any video footage of you starting the car?

Unleaded without additive, here in cuba we dont have leaded fuel !
Im using 93 octane gasoline ... its the premium here, what should i do with the timing?

the timing needs advancing, slacken the distributor retaining nut so you can rotate the distributor to advance the timing. 1st start the engine and let it warm up when the choke is fully off, slacken the nut so you can rotate the distributor, turn up the tickover and move the dizzy to find a spot at which it is running the fastest, nip the nut back up and turn the tickover back down to a steady burble. rotating the dizzy the wrong way or too far you will hear it start to splutter or falter so youre looking for that optimum sweet spot. once set rev the engine to make sure there is no flatspot as it goes through the rev range, do this with a gradual rev increase and by a series of throttle blips and listen as it goes up and settles back down for any faltering, if it responds well and is smooth throughout you have sorted it, over the next weeks monitor the sparkplugs to look for signs of hot or weak running just to check you don't have it out or have a mixture problem
