gearbox or linkage issue
« on: November 16, 2016, 07:38:46 PM »
Hi everyone,

as per the title, I have a gear box or gear linkage issue. more likely the latter. The car in question is a polish 126 built in 1998. its got the air-cooled 650cc engine.

I used to be able to select reverse by pressing the gearstick down to the floor and pushing it away from me and down (its LHD).

When I push the gearstick down and right, it feels like its in reverse but is actually in 4th. Iv been under the car and had a look at the linkage and the rubber coupling. all looks good. I had my friend try to select reverse whilst i was under the car with the rear jacked up and it selects 4th.

Also there is some kind of claw that locks the gear  stick if you flick it over. whilst fiddling about i turned to knob and the claw thing slid round. now i can't make it go back... what is this and how do i get it to go back. i can no longer select reverse or 4th!!!!!

As far as I know anything about this area, the adjustment of the linkage consists of loosening the mounting bolts on the vertical sides of the central tunnel either side of the gear lever, and juduciously sliding the lever unit back or forwards slightly until you can select all the gears. In my own experience the movement needed is quite small, perhaps only 5mm or so to make the difference between getting all the gears and only getting some of them.

As a starting point, I suggest putting the car in neutral, loosen all the bolts, then give the lever unit a good shove back and forwards to make sure it really is free to slide and be adjusted. If there is any bend, for example, in the steel side panel of the central tunnel, this could hinder the free adjustment, so make sure first that the lever really is free to slide and be adjusted.

Once you're sure of that, then you can see the two extreme positions possible, furthest forward and furthest back. Then as a starter, put the lever in the mid-way position and tighten the bolts enough to hold the lever firmly. Try to see what gears you can select. If all of them, fine, tighten the bolts fully and job done. If not, slacken the bolts and start experimenting, moving the lever forward about 2mm and repeat. If no success going forwards, start in the mddle again and go backwards.

If after all this you still can't get any location where all gears can be selected, then it looks as if there might be something wrong with the gearbox itself.

Hi there,
many thanks for the informative reply.
So i was out in the garage this afternoon and took the passenger seat out and lifted up the gear gator. there is a small bush that the selector rod goes through. It is completely perished and the selector rod is just w****ing about in the hole.
I ordered a new on so hopefully that will fix the issue.
i managed to get under the car and manually select reverse so that rules out the gearbox being at fault so I'm hoping that this £3 bush will fix the issue.
many thanks for your help.
ill update when its fixed.

i had the same problem on mine i couldnt select reverse because the ball bush on the gear level had completely died a death

i replaced the whole lot with the pollybush kit which stiffens up the whole linkage and shouldnt have to be done again

Sounds Interesting- you just find matching sized polybushes or is there a specific kit?

Hi guys. Have exactly the same problem here.

Do you have any links or part number or supplier's for the £3 bush. Don't really want to pay £43 if the £3 one sorts the problem.

Cheers
