MOT advisory - gearbox mounting bushes
« on: November 12, 2016, 10:37:42 PM »
Hello

I'm hoping for some advice.

I had my 1988 Bis MOT'd this week. Everything was fine and it passed, but there was an advisory of 'Gearbox bushes perished'.

I spoke to the garage and they said that although it was not a problem now, the gearbox mountings had deteriorated, it could become a MOT problem in the near future.

I've had my 126 for 8 years and hope to keep it for a long time.

Does anyone know what sort of job it is to renew them, in terms of cost of parts and hours of labour to fit. I am not a DIY mechanic.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Chris

Hi they are within the realms of a DIY mechanic. Getting hold of them is probably harder. Here's a link to a reliable shop I've used

https://webshop.fiat500126.com/katalog/artikelinfo/1850/transmission-bearing-rubber-piece-right

They do turn up on eBay from time to time aswell. Also, although they look the same they are different for each side. To fit them it's just two bolts and one nut and if you can do one side first then the other you won't need to hold the engine up. Just jack one side of the car up and with a 17mm spanner (I think) undo and remove the nut that that's in the middle of the rubber circle part. Then with a 13mm socket on a long extension (like, 12") undo the two bolts that go up into the chassis. With a small hammer the mount will slide off the the gearbox mounting bracket. And it's just a case of reverse procedure to put the new one on :thumbup

Looks like Axel Gerstl are out of stock on them.
There is this German company on eBay who got them listed.

Ricambio UK has also got them advertised.

It seems the prices have gone up significantly on these.

As Gadge said it`s a pretty straight forward job to do. You don`t even have to be a diy mechanic :)

There are also very nice member from Poland who can get them for a fraction of the price that ricambio can get them (I would rather tie my gearbox up with string than use them personally)
