gear box oil change
« on: June 18, 2006, 12:15:54 AM »
Hi, I am going to change the engine oil tomorow, and thinking of doing the gearbox oil too. Can someone tell me can i do this with the gear box in or I have to take it out. Gear shifting gets hard when running a long time. Also where are the screwes to pour the oil in and out.

hi,check your manual for the location of the filler/drain plugs, for your model,BUT,for the gearbox, make sure you can undo the filler plug first, they are often seized solid,(had to drill mine out) and you dont want to find that out AFTER you have emptied the 'box of oil...............for some reason aircooled cars are worse than BIS for this problem

Hi Nurudin,

I was just trying to change the gearbox oil on Friday.  It can be done with the gearbox in the car.  On my 87 aircooled the filler plug is about half way up the side of the gearbox on the driver's (right hand) side of the car and has a square head.  I found this easy enough to remove.

The drain plug is on the bottom of the gearbox and has a hole for a hexagonal tool to remove it.  I didn't have a tool so made one from a 12mm bolt.  However one of the nuts I put on the bolt striped it threads when I tried to use it.  I then went to Halfords and bought the correct attachment for a socket set.  The plug is well seized up and I had to put a bar on the end of the socket-set rachet to get extra leverage.  This broke my rachet

So I haven't changed the oil yet, and will be off to the shops today to try to find a new rachet for my socket set

Also when I put my finger in the filler hole to see what the oil looked like I found the oil full of little bits of ground-up metal like that glitter paint stuff.  Now I'm no master mechanic but I don't think thats a good sign

hi,yeh..glitter in your box aint good, but,if your box is otherwise ok dont worry too much, its prob just bits of syncro floating around after too many savage gear shifts without double declutching.....but the abuse 126's seem to attract makes it important to do the 'box oil,if you do it for the first time in your ownership,do like me,change it,then do it again after a 1000 or so miles, gets rid of all the crap that way.
to refill i find it easier to use this trick, geta funnel,a short lenth of hose, and use a new silcone bathroom sealent nozzel cut to fit the box refill hole, then you can just refill from the engine bay,i use this for doing engine oil as well on the aircooled its a pain to get to the rocker box,and it keeps burping up oil if you try to go too quick.....i just put it straight in at the dip stick hole.
also, oil changes with quality oil is the cheapest way of keeping cars running sweet, make the job easy as above, and do it more often than the books say to,i've got my aircooled running pure green oil now,no dirt in at all
oh, and i use 20/50 duckhams classic for both, hope this helps?

Thanks for the advice Dave, the gearbox oil was dark sludgy stuff with glitter in it.  I think I will change it again in 1000 miles like you say to get rid of any more that's there.

Think this is what I will be doing next. Doesn't seem to be any recent threads on it so may as well bring it back as a reminder to people.

Any recommendations on gearbox oil? I have been doing most work on my cars in the corner of a friendly landrover specialist, would landy gearbox oil be any good? Saying that, might see if stuey wants to see a complete 126 again  :D.

Cheers

I stick to the fiat brand found it reduces any whine when using other brands.

Would my, not quite local enough to be convenient, completely bloody useless when it comes to 126's (one of the guys on the parts desk thought it was a uno!!!!), Fiat dealer stock it? Or is it an online job?
