Any tips on how to replace the underfloor crossmember?
« on: September 05, 2016, 09:17:17 AM »
Hey there, my underfloor crossmember is very rusty and I have bought a new one. My mechanic reccomends I don't try and replace the whole thing and I just patch the holes to cover it up, but I have seen that others on this forum have managed the repair and also purely judging by the fact that the crossmembers are sold, it must be doable.

I'm worried about the chassis deforming when I take it off, is this a legitimate concern? The metal above the crossmember will probably have to be cut out as well so I was thinking of replacing that in stages starting in the middle

I don't have a hoist, I just have axle stands that I will bolster up the height somehow

I've seen examples where people put the 126 on its side to do underfloor work, this seems sensible as there would be less bending moment at the gap in the floor

Is there a technique to upending the car like this?

Lots of questions, many thanks for any advice you have

Cheers
Joe
