Stainless braided fuel hose
« on: May 27, 2016, 04:37:33 PM »
OK I can own up now as when I went to New Zealand at the end of October last year I parked up the 126 on the drive and it was running fine. When I got back mid January it just refused to start. I had a couple of lame attempts to sort it out but the weather and family pressures kept me from it. Had some time today and nice weather so after messing with condensers and points etc with no luck I fitted the 123 electronic ignition and it fired up straight away. Great to hear it running again but very strong petrol smell. The fuel was leaking quite badly from the fairly new braided hose. Replaced that and all is fine but I had exactly the same issue with my other car so bearing in mind that the people that sell this hose say it is racing standard is it actually safe ?

Hmm, could be unlucky with a faulty batch of the stuff, or somebody else imitating the real thing with a cheap Chinese copy. Either way its worth complaining and trying for a refund.
Did you buy it from a reputable supplier?

I got some approved for use with unleaded fuel hoze from a local established motor factor, fitted it to the BIS and to my 64 rover, the BIS had been sat for a while  but the rover only 1 yr both had to have their hozes replaced, the bis spat it everywhere, on both cars the hozes were badly cracked, too often are these overlooked, I wonder if the rubbers used themselves are not suited to modern fuels? There is much grumbling in the classic world about ethanol added to supermarket fuels but I don't buy these for that reason. One thing for sure I always inspect fuel lines, nobody wants a fireball

I bought petrol hose from Halfords for my Gamine, it lasted about 11 months before it was cracked and crumbling. I am going to buy Earls stainless braided to see if it performs any better.

for todays petrol you need R9 petrol hose as its made for all the nasties of modern fuels

sadly many motor factor shops are still selling off R6 petrol and of course theres lots of fake R9 on ebay

Belated thank you to all the experiences and contributions on this subject. I think that it is nothing short of criminal to sell this hose knowing that it will break down and become ultra dangerous after just 12 months  >:(

Been on ebay and SAE J30 R9 5.6mm hose arrived this morning and it does look like very good quality plus it has the hose type printed on it. The cost of safety was £8.19 for two metres which will do both my cars  :)
