126P misfiring, burning out condensers
« on: April 22, 2016, 01:35:24 PM »
Hi guys,

A few days ago my car started to misfire badly during a highway run. I spent some time figuring out what could be the problem, took out the carb and cleaned it, examined the fuel pump, adjusted point gaps and valve clearances and finally changed the condensor which solved the problem. That was yesterday. Today I took a short drive around town, and as soon as the car warmed up it started to misfire again. Idles fine, but loose all the power at the slightest increase in revs. I do not have any more spare condensers lying around at the moment, so I cannot fit a new one to confirm that the problem is here. But i heavily suspect the condenser as it reacted the exact same way as before and a new unit solved it.
My question is, what can cause the condenser to burn out that quick? We are talking max. 5 kms since the new one was fitted. Bad coil maybe? Or any other good ideas?

My car is a 650 126p, 1989, and i have the twin ignition coil fitted.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Best,
Mikkel Loekke

replace the condenser again before going further into it

its not uncommon to get a bunch of dodgy condensers as they are not made to the same quality as they were 20 years ago (sadly)

I use a condenser from a Cortina for my air-cooled 126. they used the wrong type of capacitor (condenser) for a place where it is really hot.

I have never had to change my condenser since I changed type.
