bis camshaft
« on: February 04, 2016, 12:55:23 PM »
I'm looking for some help with my BIS engine. I have 2 engines that I have stripped down and both have heavily worn camshafts. I have done a lot of searching on the internet and no-where has new BIS camshafts, they only have air cooled. It is my understanding that the air cooled camshafts don't fit, is this just because the distributer skew gear is different or are they completely different? Or does anyone have a new BIS camshaft? I've bought everything else to do a full rebuild just really struggling with the camshaft.
Thanks
Calum

Although similar they are different in a lot of ways. As you said the skew gear is in a different place but also the oil pump drive gear is missing on the aircooled one as its driven by different means. The giardinnia is close with the skew gear on the end but sadly no oil pump drive :( have you thought about having your old one re-ground?

Two thoughts: have you tried our Polish friends such as Legre, Piotross, 126Fan etc (see the For Sale threads) for good condition used parts, or Axel Gerstl? Axel Gerstl actually list this part for the a/c so maybe worth an email for any odd NOS Bis item they may have that's not a line item;

second thought is, what about getting your existing camshaft re-profiled? A quick google turns up http://www.newman-cams.com/dealers.html

Newman seem to have an agent near you in Eccleshall. If it's a bit too pricey for a one-off, how about exploring the possibility of getting a group order? There are many Bis owners on here, and you can't be the only person facing this problem. Again, just a phone call to Newman might give you a lot of useful information.

It might also be worth asking our European friends for pricing for re-profiling your own camshaft. I recall an instance where alloy wheel refurbishing was so differently priced between France and the UK that it was cheaper to send the wheels to the other country (iirc it was from France to UK) and back than to get the work done locally.

I just found Newman at random, but I'm sure there must be other similar firms around the country.

This company do a brand new one. Not sure if it is a reproduction or old stock.

I have bought some parts from them in the past and they are very good.

It`s all well with a regrind, but if a lobe is worn down too much it can`t be done.

Thanks for the replies and the help guys! I was thinking about a regrind, the camshaft that came out of the car was heavily worn so I think is beyond repair but I bought another engine from Lee (proxxxy) which I stripped down and the camshaft out of that is a lot better and is definitely grindable so I'm going to get some quotes for that as well. I never thought of emailing Axel gerstl I saw that the have a/c but no bis so assumed they wouldn't have but it's difinitely worth an email!

It seems as if it could be a common problem as both my engines had worn lobes and also quite a heavy scollop out of the matching cam follower. Also the bearings were pretty warn in both engines but looking at the pistons and liners neither looked like they had done a lot of miles. Is oil circulation or pressure a problem with the water cooled engines?

Looking to get the little guy running again for the Italian car meet at brooklands in April as maidon voyage!

Thanks again for the help! :)

I think that the 126 camshaft problem is down to poor quality control at manufacture where you get excessive wear on one lobe. I bought a brand new Bis in '89 and the camshaft broke after 300 miles. I would say that on average between a third and a quarter of all of the 126 engines I have stripped have a knackered camshaft. I initiated a Sport Camshaft project here about two years ago inviting forum members to get together and have good used camshafts reprofiled and hardened to a fast road rally spec , air cooled or Bis. Despite the initial excitement only one other forum member chipped in but between us we had over 10 sport cams produced. So it is possible but you have to get organised and the company mentioned here are the ones to do the job  :)

Hey, this is the Club that can produce a calendar and get a copy to a member in Cuba - how hard can a camshaft be?  ;D

Seriously, how did your price for 10-off compare with the one Ladislav identified in Germany at £178? And as you had "over 10" cams made, did you use them all?

Well the simple answer is vey hard as after reprofilling the camshafts we paid extra to have them niterided to eliminate future wear on the cam.
The original idea was to do this as a club thing to make one of the key tuning components available at the best possible price but without exchange camshafts coming in that idea was dead in the water. The first couple I sold at under £100 but at this price I was just about breaking even. The camshafts were made to the same spec as the ones you refer to I believe and I know of one guy who paid about £230 for the same thing from a UK supplier.
Did I use them all ? Well I keep stubbing my toe on a heavy box in the other room  ;D

Naive question probably, but if you've still got some lying around would they work as a stock replacement. I have a completely stock BIS engine and need a new camshaft to complete it, would one of these "sport" productions be suitable?

Or even better, if anyone knows of any new BIS camshafts that would be most appreciated!

Think I still have a spare air cooled one. It was always a shame that the Bis owners never got on board with the idea as I believe that sport cams for the Bis are rare items  :)

Ah sorry, thought he had a bis cam.

I've found one for sale in Italy at a juicy €150, but I'm going to snoop around Google for any Polish websites that have it for less...
