Bis carb
« on: February 15, 2013, 03:39:59 PM »
Hello again

So I decided to start my cars today, the aircooled started first time

Went to start the bis, firstly no starter but with a whack with a hammer it started

Fuel going through, there is spark, and fuel in the float chamber

Spark plugs completely dry, only fires when petrol is poured into the top of carb, and runs for 10 seconds

Car started 3 months ago first time, now nothing, so I think it's the carb

I know it's a long shot but has anyone a spare carb, or ideas on anything I've missed

Thanks

Hmmm...

Had a similar non start issue recently with my favourite blue car after I'd left it a while.

It was a few things:
 - the battery was low because it had not been used
 - the settings needed adjusting
 - the spark was not sparking
 - the fuel was not flowing through

The fuel bit is what might be worth checking again, we used a suction device to pull it through and it took a few attempts to get it working without manual intervention.

Not an expert so might not be the right answer - but probably worth a double check.

Every cloud has one...

If it runs with pouring petrol directly into the carb there is nothing wrong with the ignition circuit, disconnect the fuel line from the carb, put the tube into a bottle or jar, get someone to turn the engine over, If it fills with petrol there has to be a blockage in the carb, If nothing comes out of the petrol pipe it could be the petrol pump :D

Have you checked the throttle linkages are working properly? Try getting an airline to the jets and blowing them back.

If it does turn out to be a dead carb could you please let me know, I need a bit off of one!!

Cheers Marc

Thanks for the feedback  ;D ;D ;D

Probably a blockage in the carb somewhere

Definataly not the pump, I dident have anything connected to the return and it pumped fuel all over me

See if i can get the carb off tomorrow and break it down, but if it is knackerd I'll be in touch

I might be doing some other jobs on the air-cooled one as 1st and 3rd gear wasn't working and there was an oil leak from the gearbox

You can check and blow the carb out without taking it off the manifold, What seems to work is carb cleaner in an aerosol it usually come with a long flexible tube that you can direct through the channels and jets.

If you remove the carb you run the risk of damaging the gaskets + the rear retaining nuts are a real pain to take off and put back on ;D
