When you open the boot you'll see a black cap on the left, right by the rear vent. That's where the water goes. If you turn the ignition on you'll see a little red light on the dash board. It's the light on the top right and had a symbol of a radiator. Fill the water up at the cap end and watch untill the light goes off. Start the car and when it gets to temperature, open the luggage compartment an unscrew the little valve on the end of the pipe by the heater and bleed the air out untill the heater in the car comes out lovely and warm. This is a very important process as if you don't do it, you'll blow the head gasket.

The gear box oil filler point is next to the starter motor so you'll need to remove that for the best access. It's a square bolt so make sure you have a suitable tool. The box takes 1.1 litres of oil and make sure it's a non EP kind as EP will mash your synchros  up. I hope you haven't drained the oil and realised you don't have the tools yet :P

OMG I'm actually blind I didn't even see that there. Lol cheers bud. Ah that will explain why I cant find the gearbox filler. I'm used to my fiat 127 never touched a 126 before. But the 70 mile trip back was great fun.  Need to strip the carb I think and give it a clean as she takes a while to start up sometimes.

Anytime mate  ;D most people think it's the fuel cap  :o

Yeah there funny little things but a doddle to work on make sure the timings spot on as that can cause iffy starting

Just a quick note You won't find a haynes manual for the BIS (water cooled) as they never did one, they only covered the air cooled versions although it's a good idea to have one anyway as many other parts like the steering, suspension and brakes and although the box has a different bell housing I successfully rebuilt my BIS gearbox using a haynes manual so handy to have. Luckily Fiat did make an official workshop manual which is available on CD  :D

Ah that will explain that then. I just wanted a manual or cd to learn more about these little engines. So I can set mime up properly as I use her everyday :)

I've got 75/90 semi synthetic so it's not thick. What my dad used in his which done the trick quite nicely.

I use comma 75/90 semi synth in mine - the manual says 80/90 but I could only find 75/90. If it's an EP sort then it'll usually say 75/90EP on it but just check for sure. The EP stands for extra pressure (or extreme pressure) and Is not really suitable for the material that the synchro rings are made of and leads to premature failings. Even the manual says non EP so best to double check. :)

The concern is that with any old/classic puting it into your typical local garage with limited data or knowledge or even interest in finding out things like this. i.e their not going to be too concerned about which oil they use..Ok short term from garages point of view but long something prematurely fails.

I think ZC90 is the best thing to put in the gearbox.

I have ordered two litres of this ZC90 stuff which I can only surmise is made from the love juices of some rare Howler Monkey.

I wouldn't mind but did FIAT deliberately make the capacity 1.1 litres just to pi55 off owners and get them to buy 2 litres since it only comes in 1 litre cans!

It's £9.54 a litre

Ricambio charged me £7.95 per litre plus postage!
And talking about a Haynes manual for the 126, I gave up and got one on loan from my local library, and just kept renewing the loan.

Yeah I think it's £7.95 + vat isn't it ? Ummmmmm that's a good idea think Il go to the library today and see if they got one. Mine isn't starting atm. Starts after about 30 seconds of cranking over, runs like a bag of nails, miss firing, cuts out then same again.

Mine is fine starting cold, but a pig to restart when hot. Is this a fuel mixture problem? any one having the same experience?

Funny you should say that I had the same problem with my Morris minor and I changed the plugs and the choke cable because it needed doing and it's fine now. Might be a coincidence lol

OK thanks' I will try the mixture first, then invest in a new pair of plugs, keep you posted if ether option cures the problem.

Did you get your hot starting problem sorted Rick, what was the fix? I have the same problem, starts fine when cold, on the button, but when left for 5minutes and still hot, it needs the accelerator to the floor to start, it will turn over for a good 6 to 10 seconds before catching/starting  It's not fuel evaporating the carb as I have an electric pump.  :-

Mine doesn't like starting when warm at all either it seems! :). Pretty much the same story needing full throttle to get it started when warm... turns over very very slowly.

Bis owners handbook does say when starting a hot engine, "Depress the accelerator pedal slightly,"

Then it goes on to say " when the engine is hot it may be necessary to press the accelerator pedal fully down to start the engine and do not pump the accelerator as the fuel mixture will become excessively rich making starting difficult"

So there you have it. I'll have to put up with it...it's normal.

Although strange really, if I start it within say a minute of turning it off Hot, it starts on the button, any longer and I have to press the pedal to the floor, I'd love to know what the root cause is :-
