HI, im Paul. I intend to turn this pink shower of..... shock absorbers, into a red (onece again) Rally car replica...

I bought some wheels for just 30 beans!

And today, ive started stripping the whole thing out ready for paint...

And then decided to take off the dash cover, and chop down the centre console, cos i dont want a stereo!!

all that PINK is starting to hurt my eyes, better go lie down for a moment :D lol...
im sure youll sort things out, just not sure how the "oh my god i cant see" YELLOW rims are going to fit the red paint... should have gone white... ;) anyways good luck getting the girlieness out of that thing... :D
p.s. whats the mechanical side of the car like? engine good? brakes? cooling? HEAD GASKET?
p.p.s. i just remembered, how in the world did you manage to get that interior blower direction thingy (above the controls on the center console... ) out? i tried everything but it seems to be glued... ???

Well, i drove the car 23miles home and it seemed to go ok, no overheating. all that worried me was it seems to run a bit rough (but it was laid up for about 3 months) i think it needs a good service and a tune.. 4th gear seemed pointless using as my revs wernt climbing very quickly or stedily??? (maybe cos i normaly drive a 1.8 turbo injection scirocco?) Other than that it got me home. I could only seem to get 50mph out of it, and the revs felt far to low when i switched to 4th??
A few tips on helping these problems would be nice.. :D
The blower thingy is impossible to remove, so i ended up unleashing my fury and snaped it :-[ woops!! but i suppose its extra weight off... LOL ;D
Can any1 else think of any good weight reductions?? (sensible answers please!) also help with getting her engine in peak order would be good!
Now its time to weld up the holes in my sill, and the one in my floor, there tiny.. but still caused an MOT fail.. i was quoted 80 squid but i think i can get it cheaper..
Any thoughts???????

The 4th gear sound about right, i mainly use it to maintain speed, and keep consumption down, it has poor acelerating capabilities... :P
now that you got it you should do the standard service... oil, oil filter, plugs, points, condensor, air filter, new coolant, and stuff like that... should make it run smoother... also new brakes, fluid, drums if needed, cylinders... and so on...
only thing i can think of with weight reduction in mind is the spare wheel, who needs it ;D
(and bumpers, if not needed for MOT...)
p.s. didnt know that sciroccos had a turbo wersion? is it aftermarket or orig?

well if you are producing a rally rep some perspex windows can reduce a fair amount of weight.. glass is quite heavy..(really!)

I look at the 4th as an overdrive like lots of top spec old 911s used to have. Great for cruising. It is definitely the main difference that I noticed when switching up from my 500 box, then aircooled and now the Bis.
Losing the back seats are a good start to saving weight, but the more weight you want to save, the more practicality you will have to sacrifice, bus as you say, for a rally spec, practically in far from paramount.

well i came to realise i drive round all day in my car.. by myself.. so i have no need for extra seats.. and as i have a 5 seat scirocco with a massive boot.. the fiat wont need any of this..
Im thinking just one lightweight bucket seat??? maybe??

check the size my corbeua's only just fit (the padding on the sides touches the doors!)

There only small..im sure they will fit.. there 169 a pair, inc subframes.. ill have to adapt them to fit somehow

OK!! were do i start.. ive stripped the cars rusty bits down and started welding it all up (LOTS TO DO) its alot worse that i thought, but im doing a propper job on it..
Ive also spent all my pocket money on:
Cobra Classic bucket seats - Universal subframes x 2
Sabelt 3 point harnesses
Sparco Harness ahncors
Sparco Harness pads
A fiat 126 Boss
A 13'' Mountry Sporty steering wheel
New bulbs - all of them
A fire extinguiser (for that rally look)
New exhaust - Needs a chop and weld First
new gear knob
Pluss lots of fancy rally bits and bobs
Got some MDF and some acoustic cloth to make new door cards
and ro reline the back of the car where the seats were
And the list goes on and on!!!!

make sure that you strip out the carpet and all the normally wet sound deadening material, then if the car leaks at least you can mop it out!!get rid of all the bits that dont matter, keep the 2 seats as you will need to take a passenger out from time to time just to confirm the fun factor! make your bis breath better by loosing the airbox and channel in some good air into a good cotton filter, if you can forget the exhaust and only use it for mot time, then weld two down pipes to some flexi tubing and fit a
bit of good old scaffold pole welded to the brackets, it will help it along a bit. theres also a timing trick but i dont want you to do it and mess your engine up then blame me lol (its all to do with the chain..lol)....and after you have stripped it out and lowered it all dont forget the 25kg of sand in the front!!

looking to put a motorcycle air filter on, and mod the existing exhaust...
Must get it back on the road first tho.. lol :P
going to get it sanded down tomorrow (if weather lets me)

you know im thinking of doing the carpets too, its the 2 parts that arent flat that worry me, dont know how to make em round... (dk what that part of the car is called :oops: )

i think if you iron the origonal carpets flat and use them as a stencil.. you should be good to go!!!

i have drilled two holes on the back at either side into witch two push button switches go, each will operate the horn!!!

Uh oh.. was out today sticking my finger in to the little rust hole in the front.. and got it stuck :oops:... then on trying to free my (welding gloved) hand a hure chunk of 126 face fell off!! >:(
The last owners did a poor glass fibre repair over rot holes with out cutting out rot and treating it.. idiots
so ive cut alot of the front panel away to good metal so i can do a PROPPER job on it..
while i was there i cut the battery tray out as im putting it inside the car in a box...
On a happy note, most of the floor pan has been welded.. the inside of the car has been painted (bar drivers door) as its getting replaced..
Ive decided to get a expert to strip my engine and fine tune it, were also looking at fixing the common gasket problems.. while were there, were opening up all the ports, polishing them, fitting a custom exhaust and twin carbs from a kawasaki er500... hopefully i will be left with a bis (the way god intended)
Has any1 cut the rear valence before to help cool the bis????

theres a whole front panel on the bay at the mo for not alot of money if yours is holed it might be easier to replace the lot... oh and nice work on the steering wheel I had to to the same to mount an astrali wheel to a momo boss -

So no engine replacement paul?
As for that rear valance cutting, i saw a sporty bis not long ago with the valance removed, and a metal bar velded to support the engine, tbh, the shiny aluminum engine visible out the back doing what it does looked really cool, you might want to try it ;)

well the only reasons our head gaskets blow is because they get overheated right? so adding powers only going to make things worse..
So im going for engine cooling and see what happens

get a larger rad and put it in the front boot! should freeze your Ar*e off :D

ill see what i can do.. lol, as for the massive holes in the front, ive cut them back to good metal and started fibre glassing.. should be fine, alot cheaper too..
i think the bis's problems are all down to the tiny engine bay and therefore poor circulation of air...

you need to buy a modified oil pump cover i do believe ask uncle dave hes the boy for that, have a look on the italian tuning parts site cant remember the bloody name!! in reputable companys or links.

pete that looks horrid! it would spoil the car, if you need cool air channelled into the car fit a scoop under the front panel and pipe it under the car to the engine bay, or get onto a company called cool louvres who will cut them into the rear panel to let the heat out, if you fit mesh it gets all pooty and bent and looks really ooeer.

how about all the metal behind the panel? you have to cut a hell of alot away? its up to you but i think it will make your car look cheap and very "max power"

its nothing to do with retro its just that the bis is a lovely shape and doesnt really need big holes cut into it as it spoils the lines of the car, thats my view if you wish to cut holes in it so more moisture can eat into the metal then thats your call . the problem with the car is not the heat around the engine but the rapid heat build up in the engine

Its all personal choice :D If you do cut the rear panel i would'nt cut any of the metal behind, as the heat rises it will drift out on its own [-/

yeah, i only paid about a pound for it. going to get one of those abarth ones on ebay for it.

oil coolers are easy to fit, you need the timing cover machined out to take the return feed, the ones from italy for the aircooled have an adapter to take a spin on filter too....the feed out the block is straight forward too
the above info is for aircooled engines...a complete kit is availible for the a/c cars..... i would say its a great help, also fit a larger sump...dont forget cars are cooled by oil too......
i like the mesh rear panel......buzz 1 and 2 nearly had that, in the end i went for a split and raised boot lid with oil cooler mounted in the out going air stream.....my boot lid was powered so i could warm her up easier.....then with a press of a button the lid would raise.....
as a foot note....my 850 abarth studies show a small but wide water radiator mounted under and to the front of the gearbox.......i wonder if bis's would benifit from this mod?.............bis owners should study the abarth modifications to the 600 and 850 cars to aid cooling.....some good tips there....

body kit is next on list and mold them onto 1'' wider arches.. just cutting the old bumper up to fit.. long way to go tho..
