hi newbie requires info
« on: July 07, 2015, 09:28:51 PM »
hi,

I am lucky to own 2 cars that I have always wanted, a classic fiat 500 and a beautiful Fiat 126 Bis

the 126 is soon due its MOT and requires the following parts:

rear coil springs

front and rear shock absorber bushes

front suspension arm bushes

off side front king pin

does anyone know the best place to order parts, tried a few places that stock stuff for the classic 500 also and asked about but not much luck

am in Middlesbrough area

thanks

Welcome to the forum. Have you got any photos of your cars?

As to the parts, these are two main suppliers.

 and

The only tricky bit to get might be the bis rear shock absorber bushes.

A bit closer to home are Middle Barton Garage (Bicester, Oxon) and Ricambio International (Wallington, Surrey), and then there's ED Ricambi BV in the Netherlands. Having said that, I've dealt with both Axel Gerstl and Piotross (Piotr) before and both are good trustworthy sources - Axel Gerstl sometimes a tad pricey.

Some nice kits cars on the stocks I see, at 126fan.SK, eh, Ladislav?  :yahoo:

You probably realise (but it was years before the penny dropped with me) that "ricambi" is Italian for "spare parts" so everywhere you look for Fiat parts you see "ricambi", and at first I thought they were all the same company ...  (look, I only did French at school, OK ?!!)

Probably a bit too far away, but there seems to be growing popularity in the USA for the baby Fiats, so if you really get stuck you might try contacting stockists over there - some of them seem typically vast by our modest European standards.

hi,

thanks for your replies

I will give them a look and let you know

does anyone know anything about using small cars for weddings and special occasions?

a member of the fiat500 club has done it and the car looked brilliant, no doubt there may be a bit of red tape to sort but there wont be many fiat 126's doing it!

Most classic car insurance policies will mention this explicitly, either to include it or to exclude it, and also to specify whether it is done as a commercial activity or not. Check your policy wording. Generally it's included IME provided there is no financial return. So if you do offer it for beer tokens, make sure it's strictly cash and there is no tell tale audit trail of invoices, emails or text messages that an insurance firm would seize upon as a get-out clause.

Any arrangements for any form of reimbursement are generally best to be non-monetary - ie do a favour for a friend, he can do you a favour in return some other time.

Be aware that most wedding clients will want the reassurance of a back-up car being available if the weather is bad (no room in a 126 for large brollies) or if the car breaks down. Because of the time constraints, the back-up car usually has to be literally on stand-by with the engine running (well, almost!).

An alternative to the complete DIY approach is to get registered with a wedding car agency, where you and a load of other classic car owners are on the books of a central agency that handles bookings, insurance and PAYMENT!! The down side is that these places generally have a fleet of SERIOUS classics, like 1908 de Dions and Rollers to make your mouth water. I once tried this with my now-sold Jag XJ Sport, full cream leather, the works... they weren't interested... too 'common'... so don't get your hopes up that there will be much demand for a humble 126.

You know she's gorgeous, and *I* know she's gorgeous, but to most of the brides to be, it's just a funny odd little car she wouldn't be seen dead in. A 126 does *not* have the cache of a 500.

Ah, then do you remember "You're in the *Strong* country"? If you do, you can save me a bottle of Old Thumper. If you *don't*, then shame on you, you can get me TWO bottles!!  :P

Hi,

just wondered if anyone had had similar work done to their car and would it be better to get new suspension instead of just getting bushes done as i know it is a time consuming job which at garage rates adds up

Zola , have the parts you mention been condemned as mot failures? King pins are a regular one especially if they have not been regularly greased even though it only takes about 10 minutes. Coil springs is a more unusual one. Shock bushes should be easy apart from the lower rear if they are gone. Front suspension bushes will last for a long time but the exposed edges perish so look worn. Even if you fit new ones you will find they look perished within a year.
