Fuel hose replacement - access to the tank.
« on: April 30, 2015, 09:40:47 AM »
Hi all

I need to replace all the rubber fuel hoses in my 1989 Bis. I've ordered R9 spec hose to cope with the ethanol in today's unleaded but I can't see how to access the top of the fuel tank. Do I really have to drop the tank or is there an access panel under the rear seat?

Cheers
Jez

How annoying! It looks straight forward if a bit awkward. Are there any hints and tips or is it a case of 'simply remove'?

Inside the car bottom of the fuel filler undo the jubilee clips etc from the pipes and make sure they're free.

Get underneath and take off 3 nuts holding it on whilst it's supported.  lower it gently onto the floor.

Get some WD40 on the studs holding the tank before you try to undo the nuts as they can shear. The hardest thing about replacing the tank is getting the fat end of the hose back up to the filler tube. Having done it a few times I found that folding the hose top in by hand to make it small then putting on a cable clip to hold it that way made life a lot easier  :)

+1 on that.  Rusty posted that tip a while back and it makes a difficult job a doddle.
