i will not be beaten......but, help!
« on: April 04, 2015, 10:17:37 PM »
i purchased a used (45000 mile) polish 650 engine to go into my 500. i stripped, blasted and rebuilt it with the following new parts -

piston rings
big end shells
both main bearings
cam shaft
cam followers
timing chain
oil pump
alternator
aluminum fan
exhaust valves
carb
fuel pump
points, condenser, coil, leads...etc, etc
exhaust & elbows.....basically, everything!

i measured everything, put everything back as it came out, and tightened everything back up according to the manual torque settings. fitted it with new rubbers (have changed many of these engines before) nothing catching and everything adjusted properly.

Adjusted the valves (5 times!) fired her up and she runs well, but when you drive her she is as noisy as hell!!! i don't mean twin cylinder air cooled noisy, i mean can't hear yourself think noisy. she accelerates and pulls well.

exhaust sounds like it's blowing but it's not
on acceleration there is a loud tick and knock in time with the exhaust and the fire....???

i have a 500d with it's original 1964 engine (still going) and it's as quiet as a mouse. i have owned at least 10 of these cars in different guises over the years, some real nails as well and none have been this noisy. i expected it to be quieter!

any ideas....???

Not sure, but if it sounds like a blown exhaust noise it may be worth checking the exhaust gas bypass valve?
