Fiat 126P Engine Electrics?
« on: January 16, 2015, 08:55:11 PM »
Hi newbie here. Just got our 126P. It seems different to most of the engine bays i see in most pics. It has more engine electrics?!

It has no distributor or ignition coil instead has a single ignition pack type thing? This ignition type pack has a single block connector with the two HT leads going to the plugs.

Can you buy this type of ignition parts as all i keep finding is the round ignition coils and distributor types.

My carb is also different too, it has what i believe to be a weber 28 but with an electrical connection on it too? what is this for?

I know the car is one of the later more modern 126's but I'm finding it hard to find info on my model. The Hynes manual i have is an old one 1973 to 1987 which is fine for run of the mill bits and bobs but just doesn't cover my model exactly. Also while i think of it the engine bay has a black cylinder box type thing on the left hand side what is this, again tubes run into this and round onto the engine, looks like the tubes have little round valves on them? Just not sure what this is all for.

Just want to know as i like to know whats what and where i can get parts for it. It a 126P Maluch and defo from Poland, any help mucho appreciated! :)

  • It's not the carb size that matters, it's the jet

You have one of the younger models, what year is it from? I think it is an ELX.

Welcome to the forum. Finally someone else in Kent ;D as all the action seems to be up north.

You can probably still get the parts from Poland for it. These later elx models were not imported to the UK.
It has an electronic module and a sensor on the crank. I think the only adjustment is on the sensor.
If it runs ok however, just leave it as it is.
I think that box in the engine bay is something to do with the emissions.

Yes indeed another Kent 126!! Thats great news!

I have already been looking more into the ELX thingy, I'm pretty sure thats exactly what i got! Kinda pleased i think because theoretically it should prove more reliable than the old style distributor option.....but hey i won't hold my breath!! lol

Im just getting the car ready for using. Im just going to give it a quick once over to get it through the rest of winter then summer time engine out and gearbox out for a proper going over. She does have a leak from the driveshafts which will need sorting and minor leak in engine somewhere but its all nothing to serious i don't think (i hope lol).

Other than that she's in really good condition I'm aiming to keep it totally original and maintain her, were in it for the long haul! plus she's going to be my main mode of transport. Wife has a van and i don't do many miles so it gives me something to tinker with on the cold frosty mornings lol Do guys from the forum have annual meet ups and get togethers at shows and things?

If there are any dates already planned let me know as i will need to book the time off!

Hi

A late reply but I have a 126 elx too. Its got the same coil pack as found in the cinquecento/seicento/punto engines, the early FIRE engines. The crank sensor is different and i thick the charcoal canister is the cinquecento one too which helps reuse fuel vapours i think?

Other than that i think the engine is pretty much the same as UK spec ones.

Thanks

Hi, just to add  yes the black box on left side is charcoal canister as no longer allowed to open vent the fuel tank , so petrol fumes do not escape
and sensor on carb is an electro magnet supposed to stop overun as shuts off fuel when ignition turned off
