Handbrake Cable Adjustment
« on: October 01, 2014, 01:15:48 PM »
I've run out of adjustment both sides, does anyone know how to get a bit more as locking on 3 clicks would be nice. Looks like a painfull job replacing it. :-

Thanks

If you have got to the end of the adjustment, it might be worth removing the rear brake drums and checking the amount of lining thickness left on the brake shoes.

Might not be the issue, I've fitted new shoes, and slave cylinders, tried to adjust handbrake and I've run out of adjustment too. Finally managed to set it so the car passed MOT, but after driving about 50 miles handbrake was weak again. So far I haven't been able to find solution, and with that it won't pass its next one

The adjusters could effect the handbrake position too. Again if you remove the drums and get a lever on the shoe and work it back and forth so the adjuster slides in the shoe. Maybe apply a small amount of copper slip in there. There's also some adjustment on the handbrake lever itself. If you remove the plastic cover and then the centre carpet you'll see the four bolts that hold the handbrake lever down. If you slacken the bolts you can slide the lever forward or backwards about 6mm which may give you some more.

Failing that then it sounds like your cable has stretched too much to be affective and a new one needs to be fitted. It's not that hard actually I've done a couple with no real drama :)

Thanks guys, shoes have plenty of meat on them, so I'm thinking the original cable has stretched to the point of needing replacing, although I'll check the lever adjustment Gadge has mentioned. :)
