I've got an 87 A/C running an alternator and never having driven another for comparison, am wondering about my charging system's performance.
1/ At an idle, my ignition light stays on but once the revs build up, it goes out (no, goes dim). Not sure of the revs but about 30kph in third. If I stop at an intersection etc it comes back on untill I get some revs on again.
This is how I remember cars of the 1960s with generators performed.
2/ At night, with the lights on, the ign lights seems to stay on all the time.
3/ The books show a solid state regulator fitted to the back of the alternator, but mine does not seem to have this. It has a coil type regulator box mounted on the left inner guard in the engine bay. There appears to be 2 or 3 wire "jumpers" at the front (pully end) of the alternator.
Do they vary or has mine perhaps been "bodged" ?
