bis won't fire up, HELP !!!!!!
« on: July 12, 2014, 02:08:38 PM »
Fired up for 10 seconds really lumpy.  Now just turns over and over but only while hooked up to my other car. My battery shows 10v but turns over for 3 seconds and makes out like it's dead. Heaters,  horn, lights all come on. I have also noticed that the car has a coil pack not distributor,  is this standard or an up grade?
Any ideas ???

Welcome

Yes that's correct the bis has a wasted spark coil pack unlike the air cooled, any car needs at least 12 volts to fire up charging at 13.5v , it's also advised battery's are changed every 6 years on all cars,

The bis is a funny thing you have to drive it every day really or they start acting funny a charged battery probably a general clean of the carb and spark plugs and it will fire up

Good to have a club member in the midlands running a bit low  ;D

Hope I've helped

Will

Yeah I've just ordered a complete carb gasket set, new spark plugs and lead, oil and filter ring. Going to give her a good service next week and try again.

Thanks for the help Will   :D

We are slowly growing it seems eh Will :). I'm having issues with my 126 at the moment... all seems to have gone wrong after I decided to clean the oil cover and weld up holes in the exhaust! :D.

Check your earths to start although guessing you've done that if you have a multimeter on the battery :).

Probably a timing issue... mine will barely turn over with the high compression at the minute unless timing is spot on.

I think there is a disease going round attacking fiat 126s my bis was running fine last week this week, it just doesn't seem to want to do anything just backfiring, kept turning the distributor round for nothing found the weights in it weren't attached so maybe something to do with that, I can see why people take these engines out  ::)

;D my hands are clean, spent the day on it found the distributor has been kicked right out, the Marelli distributor has the vacuumed unit sitting under the back panel unlike the zelmot which points towards the carb I was trying to set it up the way the workshop manual says which is the zelmot distributor, only just realised there was two types of distributor, no more backfiring

Hmmm I have a zelmot... maybe my dad put it back together wrong somehow... just as I took the carb off again!
