500 gearbox?
« on: June 26, 2014, 04:27:12 PM »
I'm looking to purchase a 126 BIS although the original gearbox is seemingly bad, as 1st gear has gone. It comes supplied with a 500L gearbox, just wondering how difficult this would be to swap over? If not how much am I looking at for a recon box?

thank you.

Hi Jim  :welcome  to the club, you can use the 500 gearbox by just swapping over the bell housing, But the 500 box doesn't have syncro on the gears and the final drive is lower, if you have basic mechanical skills i would check the 500 box 1st gear rail, check there's no teeth missing and if its in good condition you can fit it into the bis box, or you can buy the repair kit.

Thank you for the reply. Is it an engine out job? I'm fairly average with a spanner but not scared of giving anything a go, I don't think I could choose a simpler set up to try.

I would remove the engine and then the gearbox unless you have access to a pit or ramp, its easier to handle in 2 pieces ;D and lighter.

Thank you for the advice, just weighing up whether I can manage it myself without too much trouble. :-)

You shouldn't have a problem just pull it out on a trolley jack ;)
