air-cooled air filter tip?
« on: August 06, 2013, 08:34:30 AM »
I picked up a windscreen from a polish guy last night & he told me how to tweak the lil air-cooled engine. He said cut off the original air filter tinware & fit a sports air filter onto the carb? Has anyone done this? Got any pictures or tips?

Cheers
Marc

I actually did this (sort of). I used the stock air filter and shoved it onto the plastic elbow that bolts onto the top of the carb.. It works and I "think" I may have felt a difference. As for the tinware.. I just put the cap back on so that it is still funneling the air to the filter. Now its a free cold air intake... kinda! :P

There is about 1/2 kg of steel bits inside on the fan side of the tinware for the air filter that can also be cut off.
I opted for The Delorto FZD carb so got rid of all that tinware and weight and welded-up the hole.

Hot cam and carb change so far. A bigger sump and alloy rocker.
I went the route of bigger sump to help cooling and the high volume rocker gives more space internally.
The theory was to ease internal breathing of the engine.
I've binned the mechanical fuel pump and plated the hole.
Plans have always been for more stuff but finances failed me.
Finally decided what my 500 is going to be (more or less standard) which leaves the 126 to be played with more :)
I want to go bigger pistons, steel crank, and much modified head with twin downdraft webber but we'll see :)

Can the engine lid be propped open for extra air on the 126 like the 500?

  • It's not the carb size that matters, it's the jet

I'm going with an FZD too but I was thinking of getting cold air from the airbox above the engine, I think the engine bay heats
up too much so you will be sucking in hot air.

I've seen a few moded 500's now draw air into the engine from a duct out the side of the car rather than the standard set-up.
Thing is we think we are drawing in cool air but it is cool? Considering the tinwork the air is being drawn past is right next door to the engine which heats it all up.
Would we not be better-off using the vents that are standard to let some of the hot air out?

PS not used one of those filters, my FZD came with an old school trumpet and gauze :$
